Hi

I'm taking my van out for the first time very shortly, and being a newbie, I have a possibly stupid question.

I have an Elgena Water Heater in the caravan (cant remember the model) When I am hooked up and onsite, do I leave this on all the time, or do I just turn it on when I want hot water?

many thanks

Rick

It's best just to turn the water heater on just before you need hot water, it will only take a few minutes to warm up.

Good luck with the maiden voyage

When I turn on the water heater, does it activate the external water pump? I have a supersub 88

Hello Richard,

The Elgena water heater is a storage hot water system with a low powered (660W) mains electric element. The tank should hold about 6 litres of water, and the element will take about 15 to 20 minutes to warm the water up. The element is thermostatically controlled, so it should not over heat, and it will start to reheat when the water temperature in the tank drops.

The heater and the pump operate independently, but the heater must first be filled with water before the heater is switched on. When first on site, check the drain valve is closed. Ensure there is cold water available to the caravan and the pump is ready to work. Open a hot tap and keep it open until a steady flow of water emerges. - close the tap, and turn on the heater.

You will get some luke-warm water available after about 5 mins, but full heat wont be available for about 15 to 20 mins.

The heater will remain full of water unless you open the drain valve. So you cannot empty the tank by just opening a hot tap. When you open a hot tap, the pump will run. This pushes cold water into the tank, and in turn this pushes the hot water out. So whilst the initial water will be quite hot, at the cold water mixes with the hot in the tank the over all temperature will drop. Because the element is a low power unit you will have to wait several minutes before you have really hot water again.

At the end of your stay the heater must be turned off, and allowed to cool, Disconnect the pump and then drain the heater tank by opening the drain valve, and a hot tap to allow air back into the system.
