Hi Debbie.

There are two sites in Essex that we have used, the first is Homestead lake Park near Colchester, Clacton and Walton-On-The-Naze. Nice and clean park, a fishing lake, all pitches are fully serviced, toilets and showers are spotless. The site is situated behind Homestead Caravan dealers and accessory shop, so if you fancy a new caravan or need to buy something for your van, or even if you have problem with it whilst staying there, there is always a fitter or someone on site to help you out. http://www.homesteadlake.co.uk/

The other site is the c&cc site at Kelvdon Hatch, normal c&cc standards, sloping pitches and out of date but clean toilet facilties!

Both sites are within easy access of the M25 and A12.

Hope this is of some help.

Phil.

Hi Debbe, I agree with Phil, Homestead Park is my local dealer a mere 16 miles from our house.

Never used the site to camp on but use their shop to purchase all our camping requirements.

There is a lovely cafe on the site just along from the shop, Always pop in for a bacon butties, prices are good to.

Downside I think there caravans are a bit pricey.

We've used Colchester Camping several times, which is just off the A.12 on the london side of colchester. Nice site, good toilets/showers etc but a bit noisy because it's next to the Colchester slip road. Handy for Colchester though, at a pinch you could walk in or possibly get a bus.

Homestead Park is another good one that we've used and can recommend. Spare parts are available from the large on-site shop (not too expensive either)

Not tried any CL's but there are a few around. Apparently there is also a site on Mersea Island which takes tourers as well.

We always go to Seaview at Mersea, right on the beach. Only drawback is the toilets are very old fashioned and a walk from the touring field. We're not so keen on Homestead, they were rather rude to us so we won't be going back, also found it rough and ready, lots of kids and noisy. Pretty all the same though. Just along by there on the way to Frinton is a CL, I think its something like Grange Farm. That is beautifully situated a short walk from the high street of Thorpe Le Soken, it has everything you could possibly want, walk to pubs restaurants etc. Shower and toilet isn't modern but its clean enough, has EHU. There is also a site near Ardleigh which is a beautiful little village, very pretty, antiques & crafts etc, within an easy drive to constable country and flatford mill. - so cute in fact you have to buy lottery tickets in the pharmacy... the CL is Oakview Nurseries, has EHU but no toilets. We also stayed at a CL near Saffron Walden, that was nice but can't remember the name. I agree, Essex is naff when it comes to decent sites........by the way, Kelvedon Hatch is a stacking area for planes into Stansted, also is next to some kind of rugby pitch, don't bother if you value peace and quiet...

Hi Debbie, there are quite a few cl's in nice parts of the county but there does seem to be a shortage of proper sites. We had a night at Colchester Camping a few years ago but found it a bit run down, the Caravan Club have dropped it from thier affilliated sites list, we would certainly never return. A nice site on Mersea Island is Fen Farm, we haven't stayed there but have visited friends there and we quite like the look of it.

We had a weekend at Colchester Camping about three years ago, and definately wouldn't go there again. I actually complained to the CC regarding the closeness of the pitches, I'm therefore not suprised they have dropped it! :O(
