Euro V

I ordered a Hyundai i800 auto, the dealer had no details, even couldnt give me an exact price but stated it was a Euro V engine so presumed road tax would be reasonable. Now its come on the Hyundai website I've found its Band L 226 gmsetc £445.The dealer is very fair and will refund deposit if I want to cancel but we are going ahead it works out to about £4 a week but I'm surprised by how expensive it is.Why is auto so much worse?

Euro V is just a set of emissions regulations - but it doesn't impose maximums on the CO2 which is what drives VED.
My Hyundai Santa Fe is 197gm/km so I'm not surprised the i800 is more as it's bigger and heavier.
Most automatics have worse CO2 figures than their manual counterparts because they consume more fuel, it's much less of a difference than it used to be but a difference nevertheless.
One or two automatics are actually more efficient than their manual counterpart, a couple of Subaru's for instance.

Thanks Roger, the differences between the manual and auto i800 is tiny but there you go,I want an auto,I'll have to pay it

The emmisions are helped by the technology that the car makers use.The likes of BMW, Mercedes,VW and Audi's big 4x4's all produce below 190 now and they are all autos, if fact the new Mercedes ML v6 diesel due out next year produces 179 Co2 (road fund licence fe £210) 245 bhp and 41 mpg .They even have a 2.1 diesel in the line up with emmissions of 158 and mpg of 48.

I did look briefly at the Caravelle auto but getting an 8seater auto with leather seats and metallic paint and 5year warranty for £21500 stopped me dead.Possibly the need to get the emissions lower isnt urgent with the small number they sell here, would have loved a VW but even a fairly new used one is well out of my budget sadly.
