The owners of my local Post Office have a house in France and they said they change their money to euros before they go as the exchange rate over there is poorer than here.

The PO is offering 1.22 at the moment, but I don't know if this rate will improve or not in the next couple of weeks.

Graeme.

If you take cash, and exchange it in a bank, then the exchange rate is likely to be worse, because you'll pay commission. However, if you have a Nationwide Debit Card, and use ATMs to withdraw cash you pay no 'transaction' charge, or commission. When we were there in early June we got 6 centimes more than the exchange rate we got at Marks and Spencer (1.27 from ATM instead of 1.21 at M and S). Doesn't work with all cards, though, as you have a transaction charge to pay each time you withdraw money.

Came back from France last week. I used a Nationwide Credit Card for most transactions and a debit card for ATM machines to get cash. I only took about 100 euros with me to cover the first day. Exchange rate varied from 1.25 t0 1.26 euros per pound.Incidentally, diesel is about 1.38 euros per litre in supermarkets, 1.50+ in motorway services. Enjoy.

Colin

I am just back from two months travelling. Using Nationwide Debit cards (in ATMs) and Credit cards I got 1.25 to 1.27 the whole time - much better than the UK cash exchange rate. I always only take a nominal amount of cash to see me through the first day or two before I get to an ATM.

Hi Colin,

I agree with Keithj we have just come back from Belgium, first stop getting off the ferry was the cash machine at Auchan, we consistantly got 1.26 - 1.27 euros to the pound. Its the best way to do it.

Went in Lidl in St. Jean de Mont's yesterday lots of the camping equipment on offer i.e. the Frist Aid kit and the ball lock for the hitch lock.

This Lidl does not accept any cards, although the one in Challons did.
