hi , i have recently bought my first caravan , a swift challenger 470 se , all is fine apart from the water heater wont fire up and i don't know what a 2 pin socket outlet on the rear outside is for ? any help or tips would be great

Is the socket anywhere near the water inlet? It may be for powering an external water pump.
If not that, it may be for connecting a sensor for a water level monitor, either on the fresh water barrel or the waste water container. But without more information I'd guess it's for pump power.
On the subject of the water heater - I AM NOT A COMPETENT GAS OR ELECTRIC ENGINEER - however, do you mean it won't fire on gas, electricity or both? If gas, does the caravan have a battery connected, if not the auto ignition on the heater won't work. Also for gas, you probably have an external vent with a cover somewhere - my gas water heater won't fire unless that cover is off.
If it doesn't work on electricity, have a search around the caravan for a switch or isolator that doesn't seem to do anything, turn that on and try again - you might be surprised! Also of course, check for fuses, again these can be hidden away in some surprising places.

the socket is right above the toilet cassette , there are two wires that run inside at the back of the toilet the disappear into the paneling . the heater is connected to gas , i have battery power . i will check for vents and switches , i can hear the igniter clicking so it might be a vent covered . thanks for your help.
Sounds like a vent with the cover not taken off is your most likely cause then - failing that, have a look around the heater for a valve/tap in the gas line, which may have been turned off - just because you have gas to other appliances, there could still be an isolator specific to the gas heater which could be off.
As for the two pin socket, sounds like a modification by a previous owner, in which case it could be anything I'm afraid. If you have a multimeter, check for voltage on the socket. Some owners use a submersible pump in a jerry can to fill the toilet's flush tank, and this might have been their way of providing power for this.

Is it like the chromed socket at the top right of my picture? If so it is the 12volt power socket to power a Whale water pump, probably added by a previous owner to make it easier to fill the toilet flush tank.

Is it a Carver Cascade or a Truma Ultrastore?
As for the two pin socket above the cassette area, as has been said, it is for a pump to pump water from a container into the toilet flush tank.

Your Swift should have a gas supply manifold with a separate on/off tap for each gas appliance.
This should be located under the front seat at floor level usually near the refrigerator.
The taps may not have any labels to indicate which is which.....in my Swift the water heater gas tap is red.
it is a carver cascade , i will check round for all the valves and vent covers this weekend . i guessed it is something simple a bit like me thank you for all your help to a newby .

I think the gas isolation taps are situated under the sink open the cupboard door under the sink and look either on the floor or attached to the side of the cabinet inside, my old abbey had colour coded taps with a diagram on the door to show what tap was what. also it may be that you have an air lock in the system, run the gas on the hob for a few minute's to make sure there is no air in the system then try lighting the water heater, I had an ultrastore in the Abbey which would take a few tries before it would light, as already mentioned the cover must be removed from the cowl outside.
Failing that i would get an engineer to take a quick look, Cant mess about with gas.
