My wife is an avid Facebook and Farmville user,so much so that feeding the cows and attending to the crops is a daily "must do".When we went to the Vodaphone shop, the bloke said "forget it mate a dongle is no good for that".
I'm clueless when it comes to gigabytes, megabytes, download speed and all this sort of jargon.I just pay the bills. So how do I get this Farmville to work in the caravan while we are away? She would be happy,I would be happy, sweetness and light.
Any help and advice on this subject would be much appreciated.

Thanks Richard

I always took my laptop and dongle away in the van, but really only used it for 'light' stuff - reading emails (I didn't attempt to download any attachments), checking the weather or things to do in the area, chatting on MSN, quick browse through forums and Facebook. I never played any of the games on Facebook (not that I do that anyway). Whilst I know next to nothing about all that gigabyte and speed stuff you mentioned, Richard, I would guess that a lot depends on how much signal your wife is able to get wherever you are (it's very variable), and what amount of giga-, mega- or whatever it is bytes allowance she's got on her particular dongle. I'd also heard it suggested that you turn off any automatic updating you have on your laptop prior to going away, as this will use up quite a bit of your dongle allowance (and it takes forever to do the blooming updates if the signal strength is low

). Sorry I can't be of more (or any!! lol) help, but I'm sure there are others who can.

My lot are the same, but you try and get them to do a spot of real gardening or lawn mowing and they run a mile!!!!! Lol

My guess is that Farmville is not as data intensive as watching videos or listening to music but more data intensive than reading e-mails. On your home setup (In XP) you can get a rough estimate by clicking on "My Network Places", "View Network connections", "View status of connection". Make a note of packets in/out. Run Farmville for say an hour then see how many packets have been transmitted, esp. those received. Each packet is very approx 100 characters (I think) so 10,000 packets is 1 megabyte.
Try comparing against downloading a large attachment to be sure.....
Maybe there's a simpler way but I can't think of one at the moment.

Unfortunately I think you can forget it. Had the same problem with my Facebooker, tried two different dongle providers, had full signals and it is like pulling teeth. Its just not set up for it unfortunately and leads to frayed tempers for everyone.

Thanks for your replies,it sounds like there is a capacity/speed issue which is not easily overcome. So I'm going to forget it,and she will have to do without (revert back to the knitting) and be content with sending E mails.
Postscript - a fortnight ago we were on holiday about 60 miles away, when one afternoon she says " I,m just going to pop home and sort the farm out" You can imagine my reaction !!!!!!

I just leave my fields empty when i go away if there isnt a crop with a long enough growing period. The animals dont come to any harm.

3 has the best 3G coverage in the UK and the fastest data network. 3 offer a The MiFi unit, which I have found to be very good.

The MiFi unit is smaller than a pack of cigarettes, is rechargeable & extremely portable. It connects over 3G, if available - 2G if not and obviously not at all if there is no coverage. It allows up to 5 WiFi WPA encrypted sessions to connect to it as a mobile, private WiFi access point and serves them data via the 3 data network. 2G is slow but 3G is almost full broadband speed and has pretty good coverage other than the remoter spots.

I have ine on a contract but they arae available on pay as you go. I am using my MiFi to snd this response. It is providing WiFi to my iPad, iPhone and laptop. The iPhone link is quicker over the MiFi than it's own O2 2G connection, which is positively pedestrian out where I am staying. I have no connection with 3, other than being a customer.

there was a warning about these games in a news paper , and face book take no responsability for them ,they are in fact spy ware getting you to allow them into your details then encouraging you to get friends in as well so they can find out there details , so player beware

There are also loads of viruses hiding in stuff you can click on in Facebook, which is why I'm very wary and careful about anything I do on there, and never play any of those Farmville, Mafia, Cafe type games. I use it mainly to chat to and keep up with friends and relatives. I think it's a good thing, so long as you're careful - and especially don't reveal anything you wouldn't want the whole world to know!! (Just like on here, or any other forum for that matter, really).
