Fake or real?

If the change in colour was due to the river carrying more sediment after a storm, then the river would have been carrying more water, too, but the photograph of the river in it's 'normal' colour show basically the same amount of water. Maybe there was a slight change, but the photographer must have retouched the picture to accentuate the change.
 
I suggest that you read http://www.calgaryherald.com/business/Skeptics+question+river+photos/3454821/story.html The pictures were alos in the National geographic so maybe not fake after all.
 
the "phenomenon" is not in question, it is well documented. but these pictures are so badly photoshopped that jeff healy could spot the errors.
