Hi Folks

We are travelling from St Helens, Merseyside to Port Eynon on the Gower this weekend to attend a friend's ordination at Swansea Cathedral. We cannot leave until after work on Friday, ie, about 4pm and so are looking for the FASTEST route as we want to arrive asap.

The route planners seem to suggest either

Motorway, M6, M5, M4 c.230 miles

or

M56 to Chester and then down A483 and A40 - c190 miles. (I have used first part of this route as far as Oswestry previously.

Any comments/suggestions would be most appreciated.

Anyone know the site we're going to - Carreglwyd in Port Eynon?

Regards

Tim

Hi Tim. I would have thought your best route would be M6, M5, M50, A40 linking onto A449 (from M50 Ross to M4 at Newport - dual carraigeway all the way), M4 at Newport through to Swansea. This route cuts out the Severn Bridge for possible high winds and toll. There are many alternative routes to Port Eynon from the M4 in the Swansea area. I haven't any experience of the sites at Port Eynon as they are so close we can make the area in approx.30 mins from home.

Be careful on the M4 west of Newport as it alternates from three to two lanes and also portable over bridge speed camera vans and fixed cameras on the 50mph stretch through Port Talbot.

Hope the weather is good for you and enjoy both your journey and break in south Wales. Good luck.

Stick to the motorway all the way. The raods through mid Wales, although very scenic make it hard going to make any progress with the van behind.

Carreglwyd in Port Eynon in in a superb location. It is right on the beach and within spitting distance of a shop, chippy and Pub. The approach through the village can be a bit tricky but if yopu take your time you will be OK.

Come off the M4 at J42 and follow the dual all the way into Swansea, then pick up the signs for Gower that will take you towards Mumbles. After you pass the University look out for the signs for South Gower. Thes ewill talke you all the way to Port Eynon.

Hi Tim,

I would totaly agree with Colins route to the Gower. I have used this route to LLantwit Major, about 20 miles from the Gower for over 20 years, well atleast from the time the M4 went that far. Its a good route but I would suggest you travel early Sat morning to avoid all the Friday traffic at Birmingham which is a nightmare at times. Sat morning is almost devoid of Wagons and is almost always free flowing. I also travel from St Helens / Wigan area and until recently my mother in law lived there. The wife still has relitives in the Bridgend and Ronda areas.

Good Luck, Brian

Hi Folks

Thanks to all of you who commented on the route to the Gower. We started off on the motorway route but before we'd travelled a 4 miles hit delays on M6 so we diverted to the Midwales A483 route via M56. It took about 6 hours going down, a bit more actually as we got lost near Swansea and ended taking a city centre tour with the van in tow.

On the return journey we travelled the motorway route. It took about 6 hours too although we were delayed by coming off the motorway to find LPG after the services we were hoping to use had closed its fuel area!!

On the other hand we had a very good weekend and met up with a number of old friends, some of whom we hadn't seen for nearly thrirty years!! Carreglwyd Camping ground was lovely. Clean and right next to the beach. The owners were very understanding of our delay and admitted us after 10.30pm!!

Thanks again to all who advised us.

Regards Tim and Cary.
