Ferries

Hi

Having driven on and off the Isle of Wight ferry a few times, I can see that it's quite 'cosy' - for want of a better expression. I hasten to add that I've never done it with a caravan in tow.

For you hardened towers out there - is it as straightforward to get on/off a ferry (any 'better' than others?) or is it a nightmare?

Hi Mark-not worth losing sleep over! Most ferries now are either drive-through, or big enough that you can easily drive right round, even with a 'van connected, and eventually straight off again.

I've been using Wightlink every year for about tenty years (I run a youth Camp in Bembridge). We never have any problem with our Bailey Pageant. I believe Red Funnel Ferries might be a bit tighter on width. The staff on all these ferries are really helpful. I still prefer the room on Cross Channel ferries but non of them should give you too much to worry about.

The Isle of Wight is a great place to go to.

I live on the Isle of Wight, never had any problems with car only or with a caravan. Both Red Funnel and Wightlink put cars and caravans on the main deck along with all the other goods vehicles, cars only usually go up on the mezzanine decks.

Just be careful opening doors as some people cannot judge the lanes as they drive on.

Hi Mark, we went to the Isle of Wight in March this year, had caravan one year, first time on ferry it was a peice of cake not a problem, (forgot to mention I wasn't driving my husband was) but first time for him. We will be going again lovely Island.

Hi Marc,

I've been on a few ferries and it really is straight forward.Just make sure your gas is switched off and the caravan brake is on.The ferry people are very helpful.

Dont know the length of your van but be careful getting on or off the ferry I have a 7.5mtr length caravan & have to watch that the back end does not ground, a shorter van no probs.

Hi Mark,

Following on from Graham's point,if you have "Big Feet" or similar fitted to you rear steadies you should remove them before the loading ramp does it for you.

I've lost two set so far--- Never learn!!
