Ferry prices

I've been looking at various ferry option for early September. What surprised me is that Brittany Ferries Portsmouth Caen was £251, with Portsmouth Le Havre £289, but Dover Calais/Dunkerque via DFDS was £311. That was a surprise given its a very short crossing. These were all fully flexible prices, which given our track record on cancellations is essential.

It got me thinking wrt Dover to Calais/Dunkerque whether buying a ticket very close to departure times might offer any worthwhile savings. Any views
 
After looking at a number of options I have decided to use Euroshuttle, for our dates and times of travel it was not much more than the ferries. For the basic tickets Shuttle was £232 and ferries £205. But what clinched it was the breakdown and travel insurance package which for the Euroshuttle was£84.53 for RAC supported breakdown cover and only £130.5 for the combined breakdown and travel/medical insurance. Nice thing about the medical cover is that no declarations are required. You just have to confirm that your GP would consider you to be fit to travel at the time of taking out the policy in the event of a claim. In comparison LV who we have Boundless discount and motor and home policy discounts wanted £239.32 for their basic cover.

So it is off to Germany, with a couple of days en route in Bastogne.
