Let's be fair - the mods are correct, this hasn't been a particularly caravan orientated thread so far. So let's be serious for a moment and bring this discussion back into line.

A fat fireman could be potentially disastrous when confronted with a blazing caravan with trapped occupants. The diminutive width of most caravan doors would prove challenging to a would-be rescuer of ample girth - and could well result in the luckless caravaner's being being burned to death.

What's needed are wider caravan doors, or leaner fire personnel.

Perhaps part of the initial recruiting process for firefighters should involve a test of passing comfortably through a caravan doorway? Then we'd all sleep a little safer, I'm sure

Just a final word from me, I think it was a good call from the mod.

It seems that certain groups are easy targets for cheap jokes or jibes i.e. fire service ,teachers, etc

It's a job i tried hard for and a job i train hard for, theres a lot of unhappy employees out there but do sod all about it exept moan about others.....nuff said

Tetchy, You should write " in my opinion " good call Mods !!! What I would point out that this was a serious question looking for other peoples points of view. As soon as this was posted under " General " I re posted under " Chit Chat " within 5 minutes. I realised it was not caravan related

ps My best friend is a Fire Officer ( ADO )

My Sister in Law is an Arts Teacher

My Daughter in Law is a Theatre Nurse

My Sister works in a Care Home

So I don't need lectures from anyone re Public Service Jobs

The issue of fat/unfit/obese/overweight employees (or whatever term the PC brigade prefer to use) is easy to sort out and its not exactly rocket science BUT what it does take is a management in a particular organisation to have the b*lls to deal with it in the following or similar way.

1. ALL operational employees of Police, Fire, Ambulance and Prison Service will be required to pass an Annual Personal Fitness Test.

2. This test will apply to ALL persons joining any of the above services on or after 1st Jan 2009.

3. Failure to pass the test will require a re test after 3 months of guided fitness training.

Failure to pass the re test will result in a loss of rank or pay followed by a final re test after a further 3 months.

Failure of this final test will result in dismissal on the grounds of Neglect of Health (for example).

4. Medical conditions which prevent the passing of the test (as agreed by approved Medical Practitioners) will be a valid defence.

Although this would take some years to show a marked effect at least it would be a start and lets face it, we need to start somewhere.
