first time abroad

We are hoping to go to France in April would appreciate any advice on where to stay without a great deal of traveling also we will be taking our dog as well so any info on ports etc would be appreciated

You'll find the cheapest port is probably Dover/Dunkerque with Norfolk Lines (at the moment), or if you have Tesco vouchers you can use them to buy 'Deal tokens' which you can offset against the price of a crossing with Eurotunnel. However, other ferry operators are just hitting back with some bargain offers. If you're a member of the Caravan Club, or the C&CClub then check them out for ferry prices - often they offer good deals.

In April you'll find most campsites have available space - have a look at the Camping Cheque website, www.campingcheque.co.uk, or Touring Cheques, www.touringcheque.co.uk, or www.campingcard.com (ACSI). These all offer good discounts against the normal campsite tariffs, (current rates for one night are around

If you are a caravanner or camper I would suggest you join either the CC or C&CC they have a wealth of information particular with reguard to the taking of pets abroad.

I would endorse the comments that Val A (a well put together piece of advice)

HI Robert ,normally going over the channel is staight forward

these days,but add a pet ,whole new ball game,ist step before you

go ,get the vet to check your paper work is ok ,and the chip

has not moved,ferry crossing as short as possible,as the dog stays in your car .Once in France you need to find a vet to see

you dog, 24hrs before your return passage, max 48hrs,

Calais is not the cheapist place for vets,so find a camp site away from the port,you have 24hrs before you can sail.We use

a vet near TOURS 38E for both dogs,nice drive to Calais,stay in the P&O compound overnight ,you will need to be at the checkin

Log on to Select Sites - they are very helpful and will arrange all paperwork for you if you so wish or just advise. Their service is brilliant. Depending where you live - our first trip over the water was to Benodet so went from Plymouth to Roscoff as it was approx 90 miles driving over there, most driving for me was in this country from home to Plymouth. 6 hours on ferry but time soon went. Travelled to Plymouth night before and stayed on quay side for night for free. Roads in Brittany are brilliant and not toll roads. Stayed at Camp du Lety - fantastic site and will take dogs. Sadly I'm not so sure about Select Sites any more. We also used them for years and found them terrific. However Andrew and Bernadette Erskine have sold out to Eurocamp (during winter 2007/08) and the Abergavenny operation seems to have closed. And I'm afraid it showed last year when we had an issue about booking a fully serviced pitch when the new operators couldn't help and said we'd have to sort it out ourselves with the site; and I just know that Andrew and Bernadette would have sorted it for us.

As it happened when we arrived at the site 8 months later we were able to arrange an upgrade to a fully serviced pitch, but I still think it wasn't super service from the booking agency.
