Fitting a Crystal Mk 2 winter conversion kit

Does anybody know how these work? Looking at them on Ebay, they seem to be the same as the normal filter housing but without the filter. Where are they fitted? How are they connected to the water supply pipes to avoid freezing? Do you use the normal water porter and pump, but inside the caravan?

hi ken

I think the answer to your question is yes.

the ones I have seen use the normal pump (whale type)but have to be fitted somewhere out of the cold, either inside the van toilet, btm cupboard ect, using a smaller container or on the other side of the van ie, in the awning, the two housings are connected together via a pipe taken from the blocked off spigot on the main housing, hope this helps

If you have a fixed bed van, then under the bed is a good place. use a plastic jerrycan ideally about 20 litres and mount the socket so that you existing pump can fit into it and into the jerrycan. The can needs securing by bungee or other means.

Then you need a tee piece and some water pipe or the appropriate size. Fit the tee piece into the existing line from pump housing to taps and connect the thrid outlet to the new socket. Depending on type you may need to fit non-return valve/s but Whale sockets laready have these fitted. Then parallel connect the electrics from the back of the existing socket to the back of the new one - perhaps through an on/off switch.

I've done this on several caravans and it's very useful for overnights - e.g. on the way down to Spain in January.

Thanks both. I'm not sure the work is worth it for the few times I might use it in freezing conditions. Every junction or T piece is a potential leak. Maybe a good insulating jacket for the water porter and insulation on the external pipes is a better option, or use bottled water, heated if necessary on the gas hob for washing, etc.
