Fitting a privacy curtain

Hi everyone. I have a 2005 Bailey Pageant Bretagne and am thinking of fitting a privacy curtain across the front to section off the double bed area. I have been told that this can be done by using a swish curtain rail. Is this correct? Also, how is the best way of attaching it to the roof, if I can in the first place. Do I drill, raw plug and screw or just screw it straight up. Looking forward to straight forward, plain english replies please. Thanks Zoe

i did this a long time ago and used a gripfill to cement it to roof (the track)it also moves with flex as long as its no a solid pull door its fine .
If you screw the track you will need to put a wood batton in roof to screw to make sure you dont pearce roof if you use screws psmthe van still has curtain in as its still at my storage some 5 years on.

I've done this in 2 different ways to give us some privacy when 'vanning with the kids.
(1) On my previous Avondale I contacted them and they provided me with a roof diagram showing where the roof "timbers were and used SHORT screws to screw into the ceiling where there was a "spar". It worked fine with a "Swish" type curtain rail.
(2) With my current Bailey Arizona Senator I bought an extendable shower curtain pole and use this with large wooden curtain pole rings. This arrangement is not so secure and CAN fall down if pulled too hard. I brace it against the caravan walls on each side. We don't use this much now as the kids have "grown and flown" and we only occasionally have "visitors" staying overnight. This less permanent solution is okay for this occasional use and we store it in the house when we don't need it.
With both arrangements it needs some thought as to the position of the rail/pole in relation to the cupboards on each side and roof fittings such as roof windows, lights etc. A lighter type of curtain fabric is best, especially for number (2).
Another tip is that the curtain only needs to extend just below the height of the made up bed, not to the floor.
You, also have to think where the curtain is going to hang during the day. On both vans there was/is a gap in overhead lockers to accomodate the side bunk privacy curtain and the extra curtain slid into there okay.
Even without knowledge of the roof "timbers" I reckon you could probably secre a "Swish" type rail to the ceiling board with SHORT screws - but I couldn't guarantee it. I'm sure the Bailey Caravans' help line could advise you.
I hope this helps. I don't know why caravan makers don't recognise this problem as the front double is obviously intended for "Mum and Dad" who'll want some privacy!!! It would be much easier if they fitted a rail - it would be light and wouldn't cost much!!

The awning and multi play DS games work for us of a morning but the shower curtain rail sounds ideal for when the DS's and Ipods have gone flat!!!

Thanks for the reply Tim. You have actually given me a lightbulb moment with the mention of the shower rail. There is a small gap above each of the side lockers, enough to rest a pole on if required which I could remove and store under the front seat, particularly if telescopic which would require no fitting at all. Fortunately, I am a trained curtain maker and upholsterer so I could make the curtain light enough and tailored to fit the various lengths across the drop - might even just forget all that work and buy a shower curtain! That certainly removes all the worry about damaging the roof and won't leave any marks. Zoe

Hey Mr Gump, thanks for the reply although it does sound a little like hard work particularly if I bodge it - the stick that I would get from im indoors would be unbearable ( an no, before you ask, he cant do it. Not even a plug). I will give this a miss for now as a further reply I had was so simple, cant imagine why I didnt think of it myself. No doubt you can see for yourself. Thanks anyway. zoe
