Fitting Alko Stabiliser

I would push in or pull out the over-run mech and use a flat bladed screwdriver in the hitch hole to try and catch the "eye" of the damper.
 
It's of no help (to you) now, but the AL-KO kit comes with a pin that holds the damper in place when you remove the bolts that hold the old coupling in place - remove only one bolt - then insert the pin - then remove the other bolt - fit the new coupling and one bolt - then the last bolt knocks the pin clear.

You may still be able to use the AL-Ko pin to grab the eye-hole of the damper
