Hi Trucker,

I have fitted several on board tanks to my vans. The way you pipe it etc depends on the type of pump system you have.

I actually have a Bailey original tank to get rid of if you are interested.

Let me know what you have and I will try to point you in the best direction

Regards

Jim

Trucker,

Last year I fitted one in a 2008 Swift Challenger with on board pump. You have to fit 2 off 3way valves in order to fill it from aquaroll and then to suck water from it to power the van. I got my valves etc from Caktanks ltd.

Just ask

Thanks guys, Im not that technical, what I read is over my head, what I was looking for which I cant find on the net is a diagram of how it looks what goes where and then with diagram against instructions understand how to do it.

Once again thanks for your info.

Trucker,

If you know anyone with a 2008 Swift group van, then in the instruction book I am certain there was the water system diagram for the Conqueror with the on board tank.

Unfortunately the 2009 model now features an auto fill system which works differently

Trucker,

I have still got the list of components that I ordered from Caktanks including the tank and positions of holes etc. if this is any good to you.

This was one of the best installations I have done to date and worked well.

I'm not sure if I'm in a minority, but I had an onboard tank in my 1998 Avondale Avocet and have now bypassed it both electrically and water-wise.

The problems started when the onboard pump failed. The replacement was shorter and was therefore out of the water before the low water level sensor isolated the pump before it burnt out.

The arrangement was to pump water from the aquaroll into the onboard tank. When the taps were opened or the electric toilet flush was used the internal pump ran, and then the external pump ran to top up the internal tank. It seems a waste of battery capacity to me to have to run pumps twice to get the same amount of water, especially when you are not on hook-up.

Some people say that you get extra water for a longer shower with 2 tanks, but the waste tank is still the same size and only capable of holding the capacity of one supply tank. If you are on a serviced pitch for the waste you also have the single tank being replenished whilst showering, so what's the gain?

Am I missing a point here?

Woodlands camper, I agree with your points, but, we caravan all year and having an onboard tank gives you less risk of freezing water butt/pipe. We have managed for the past 4 seasons but it was a nice to have alternative not a must have accessary.

If it is cost prohibitve for us ill buy a jacket for the aquaroll as we already use foam pipe insulation for the water pipe from the butt.

Im still thinking what would be best long term.

Prior to the Avocet I did have a 1993 Lunar Clubman. That had a water inlet point in the vanity unit in the toilet cubicle for winter use. A pipe went from this inlet to the back of the water filter housing, as did a pair of wires for the pump electrics. To use it - a plastic jerry can was placed on the floor of the shower area and the pump (normally used in the outside aquaroll) was placed in the jerry can and connected to the internal point. The blanking plug was removed from the internal inlet point and plugged into the external point. Thus when water was demanded it was taken from the internal tank (which didn't freeze because it was inside the van).

I wouldn't have a caravan now without the on board tank, my system works different to WCamper, the on board tank has its own pump, the level sensor does NOT stop the pump, only gives a indication that the tank water level is low.

Advantages

1/ water is generally warmer so hot water tank goes further.

2/ if outboard tank runs out, just flick a switch to bring the onboard tank on line, no night time trips to the water tap.

That's the system on my 2004 bailey.

Not sure how the on board pump system works, one pump and change over valves?

Now we have it , we wouldn't be without it. It's usable capacity is approx 30 litres. Plenty enough for a shower in conjunction with the hot tank.

Interestingly enough the arrangement of plumbing on the Bailey Senator means that the water drawn from the inboard tank exits the taps at a higher pressure than that drawn from the aquaroll. There is also a level cut off switch so it can't be overfilled. Filling is via the aquaroll.

We use it all year in the knowledge it wont freeze .

Cheers

Thank you all for your comments, Ill proberbly go for it but it may not be a DIY job for me, as the van is less than a year old, so illcheck with the dealer for a cost.

My Royale has two onboard tanks, which I disconnected when I bought the van.I just don't see the point of pumping water out of the Aquaroll into the tank, then back out again. I now just pump straight out of the Aquaroll into the tap.

I'm not the only one against onboard tanks now !!

Its gooed that we are all different

The thread was about fitting a tank

I have been fitting them to my own vans for 20 years and wouldn't be without them

I could give reasons but the thread was about how to fit

Well got an answer from my dealer and the price I got from them to supply fit, I thought I was buying a new caravan not having a water tank fitted.

hi trucker

I understand your reasoning in the interest of fitting a inboard tank as i contemplated doing the same thing 2 years ago after getting soaked every time I filled up the aqua roll during the very wet summer and thought the extra water capacity would be worth the effort.

however on reflection decided not to bother because both the cost and the loss of storage space seemed too high as well as the fact that it would take 2 aqua rolls full to get started and would take 2 more if the level got low assuming the inboard had to be emptied for travlling "30 litres of water weighs a lot when the user payload has to be taken into account".

my solution was to fit a spare water inlet like the one described by woodlands camper "18 Oct 2009 02:34 PM" on the other side of the van ie inside the awning with a spare 20ltr container the advantage of this is obvious
