Fitting onboard water tank

Can anyone give me any advice as to how to fit an onboard water tank to my bailey auvergne?

Or do you know where i could find this information out?

On board as sold by Whale for winter use.tanks can be a mixed blessing and previous threads have discussed. A reasonable compromise particularl useful in winter or long ransit is to install a reasonably large container - 20 - 30 litres under a seat or bed, and fit a second pump connection, e.g. as sold by Whale. A tee connection and a isolation valve for the water line and a parallel electical connection for the pump supply then gives you the abilty to use the "on board" tank while being able to remove the container for cleaning - a major problem with most on board tanks. This way you have more choice of location, so can get the tank nearer the axle. Also likely to be a lot cheaper than full-blown obt's and easier to fit. bits available for all sorts of places but if stuck look at caktanks.co.uk

I've used this sort of set up for about 7 years after having a makers installed on board tank and would not go back.

Hi Ray

Its good to see another viewpoint but I have used purpose made tanks for 18 years and it has been easy to clean them out via the large cap as fitted on the Fiamma

In practice there has never been anything that wasn't sorted by the preventive measure of an aquatab every now and then

I am not saying that the problem doesn't arise but its not happened with my outfits ----yet!!

I must say how pleased I am that the 2 links I gave to other websites have been allowed to remain and not axed as can happen on some sites

As I see it we are just trying to help fellow caravanners not scoring website points as can happen

I have used a similar system as described by Ray S for over 10 years..........

I used Whale components and 25 ltr translucent plastic jerry can for the tank.

This is mounted in the front wet locker and is secured to prevent movement.

Minimal weight was added to the noseweight, as the tank can be empty or near empty when towing.

The spare wheel has been move from the locker to a rear of axle carrier.

The locker is heated by a 12v 2" fan that transfers warm air from the living area of the caravan to the front locker.

This prevents the water from freezing in sub zero temperatures.

My system consists of :-

2 x 25 ltr translucent plastic jerry cans that can be used as above or externally in the normal way.

2 plug in pumps that can be used in either location, or even both together, as they are water pressure operated.

A fold up truck to transport the jerry can to the supply tap.

A made up short water hose and plug, so that the internal tank can be filled in situ from the other jerry can via the other pump.

In this instance the transferring pump is powered by a dedicated 12v supply in the front locker using a DIY electrical socket.

Personally I prefer translucent plastic jerry cans to Aquaroll's so this system has that added bonus for me!

Hi JohnG just goes to show what a varied life we live. 17 years ago I bought a van with onboard tank wwhich did not have easy clean and in which the pump would not self prime and it has probably soured me for life !

This prejudice has been reinforced by a friends new van with obt which is a complete pain to fill, needing access to pump and valves under seats and waiting to hear the water overflowing to know when full. Also mounted right up front, so no realchoice but to drain down before towing - not very social to next occupant of pitch.

However, I can see the benefits particularly in transit and if installed in a balance neutral position (although doesn't help the all up weight).
