Sorry if this has been requested before but what is the best method of fixing the long vehicle marker boards to the rear of the caravan stipulated by Spanish regulations for outfits longer than 12 metres? I don't want a permanent fix and was considering using double sided tape but do not know if it would be difficult to them without causing any damage.

Hi DJM,

You could try using velcro, I have used this to hold my number plate on which has been on for the last three years without any problems. Velcro is very strong so should do the job no problem.

If the rear grap handles of your van are suitably placed, you can fit a cross beam between them by clamping the ends to the grab handles and then attach the plates to the cross beam.

My Burstner has vertical handles which are right to the outside edges. I took a U section - actually three sides of a square - aluminium extrusion and clampted it to the handles with a bolt either side of the handle and a cross plate suitably drilled behind. Then the plates attach with the same bolts plus one each nearer the centre.

The advantage is that the components stay in the van until out stop on the French border so avoid any possible disputes on legality in France or UK and avoid people snagging clothing etc. on them when passing close to van - e.g. on ferry. No holes or velcro on the van. You can get 2m+ extrusions in most DIY places - usually with shaped timber mouldings in the rack - or just google steel and metal suppliers.

Hi to you all out there.I have contemplated this very issue myself. The way that I intend to comply is to use my old removable trailer board(the white one with lights, triangles & registration plate position). It is moulded ABS type plastic & quite lightweight.Strip it out and fasten the extended marker board to it.In order not to scuff the rear panel I intend to fit foam pad buffers and using two plain Dog Collar Type straps positioned where the rear grab handles are make a secure but removable fix.A budget strap alternative might well be the (replacement) rubber straps that are available for fixing certain types of towing mirrors.

I would tape it inside the rear window then when your finished it can be stripped off that is if you have a rear window in your van.

i stuck the number plate sticky pads on the back ,and i drilled a in the top of each plate and put an electrical tie through the hole and around the grab handles in case they came loose , once i got back in France i cut the ties and pulled the plates off , and cleaned the residue from from the double sided sticky pads from the rear glass fibre panel with white spirit
