If you are staying as a guest in another persons country...then get your St Georges' flags out and wave them about....quite frankly what do you expect!

Patriotism IMO should be kept within your caravan, that way it doesn't cause offence and resentment to others. There is no need to advertise where you come from!

Well working in the most historic port in the country - Chatham I 'm rather partial to a flag. My main observation often the Union Jack is hung incorrectly. yes it can be hung upside down.

Secondly obviously caravan'ers from the Isle of Man are rare but I have heard of one motorhomer who raised his Manx flag in southern Spain and nearly caused a riot as it was close to or replicates the Basque flag or rather that of some based Basque based terror group so be careful!!

Monkey's Husband
It's not a jack, it's a union flag.

I used to work in Chatham, when it was a working Naval dockyard BTW.

Ships and boats always fly the flag of origin.

I rarely fly the union flag of georges cross; I only fly them when we're at a big site so that our kids can find their way back and when we're in Whales .

Hi Frank - I can only apologise for the way in which you and your family were treated in north Wales. I am sure this would not be the normal attitude of the average Welsh person. There is definately not this attitude and hostility in south Wales. The only time there is any form of banter, which is generally fun rather than any thing else, is when Wales plays England at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff at rugby.

Stinky Pete I do not understand where you have the idea that by flying the flag of St. Geaorge it "pigs the Taffs off". Perhaps it is this attitude that causes the friction on flying your home flag and has caused the resulant insult that Frank met with in north Wales.

OK Its probably a good thing for your children to be able to identify you 'van on a busy site, but why a flag? Wouldn't one of those little wind socks do? And to fly a St. Georges flag in Wales just for the hell of it seems a bit childish to me.IMHO

I think Stinky Pete's comment is quite the nastiest thing I have read on here in a very long time. I am not Welsh, I don't even particularly like Wales, but I found this posting to be downright offensive. Surely he should have his membership suspended? Personally, I wouldn't dream of flying a flag of any description. The great thing about caravanning is that it brings us all together; attempts to divide us up into little enclaves by the use of flags etc, seems to go against the whole spirit of getting along together.

British born but English by the Grace of God - that is me. You wont find anyone more patriotic than myself but for the life of me I cant understand the need to fly your flag on campsites. One small observation though, it is ok to fly the Welsh or Scottish flags or wear patriotic shirts, but to do so if your English you are frowned upon by the politically correct minorities of our society and labelled a racist. Also by the same politically correct minorities we can no longer have Christmas, its now to be called Wintertide. It goes on and on and will only get worse. I fear for my country and whats being done to it. I'm afraid that the late Enoch Powell will be proved right. He was given no credibility just like Arthur Scargill when he forecast that the Tory Government wanted to close all the mines, where are the mines now?

With you a hundred percent there Lord B. How many times do you see the Red Dragon or the White on Blue flag on a car. Personally I don't mind, I see no reason why you can't be proud about the place your from, but when we are told to take down either the Union Jack or the Saint George Cross because it offends the minorities, it makes my blood boil. I am not a racist, but the "do gooders" are trying to make me one.

Strange how you can resist what seems to be a pointless argument on this forum, only to be drawn into it in the end...

When we go away we always raise the Red Dragon flag - hitch it to the jockey wheel attachment on a long pole. As a patriotic Welsh couple we have been doing this for many years and have no complaints from either the site owners/wardens or fellow campers. In fact on several occassions it has served as an ice breaker in making friendly conversation with other campers. We will continue to fly the flag and be proud of it. Incidently on the rear of the van there are also two Welsh stickers on the inside of the windows, wont stick anything on the body work. All I can say is fly your flag and be proud of it
Hi Colin, were you at The Paddocks near Hereford a couple of weeks ago, we were, and there was a van with the Red Dragon flag on the jockey wheel could this have been you.

Hmm, some-one has edited my posting. Delete if you must but to edit can completely change the intent of the message.

The way it's been left indicates that I'm a nice bloke whereas what my intent was to engage in debate at the expense of being disliked.

P.S. Kanga, please come back mate in what ever form.

Hi ALL - I think my original reply has snowballed into a somewhat bone of contention. I must therefore offer my sincere apoologies to any person no matter what corner of the world they are from if I have caused offence. I am proud to be Welsh as are the English, Scottish, Irish, etc. proud of their country of birth. My intention of flying the flag is purely as a gesture of proudness and not to cause annoyance to others or to go against the PC brigade. Therefore one and all please accept this apology. Thank you.

Stinky,

Not quite sure what you are trying to say here - has this post been edited as well!

"The way it's been left indicates that I'm a nice bloke whereas what my intent was to engage in debate at the expense of being disliked"

Does this mean that you are NOT a nice bloke and take offence to being thought of as one? and is your objective REALLY to be disliked ??

How very odd!......

Chrissie - think of the song -We'll keep a welcome in the hillside, we'll keep a welcome in the vale, this land of ours will still be singing, when you come home again to Wales.

No need to apologise Colin, there was nothing offensive in your post and theres nothing wrong with healthy debate.

Like you Jane, I couldn't understand what Stinky was trying to imply. It just didn't make sense after Chrissie had posted "I think Stinky Pete's comment is quite the nastiest thing I have read on here" then he implied the editing of his post made him sound nice. Makes you wonder what was edited out if thats the case.

Hi All

For anyone with a desire or requirement to be disliked may I suggest they travel to Scotland and wear either a Celtic or Rangers Strip and then go an stand in either the Rangers or Celtic area.

Should provide several years of masochistic input.

Hi,

I also added a baiting comment in response to some Welsh chappies damaging a caravaners 'van.

Got some good replys but then my posting has been altered to remove the contentious bit.

The comment was not insulting it only indicated that I fly the british flag when in Whales as I know the Welsh don't like being part of the UK.

Also, I don't have a "desire" to be dislike. I tried to put over that I don't mide being disliked so long as the point is raised.

Whales are large/very large air breathing mammals

found in the oceans.

No relation to the Welsh who live in WALES

My wife is half Welsh and we spend a lot of time on the Gower. One of the best bits of graffiti seen on a bridge when entering Wales several years ago:-

FREE WALES - on which someone had inserted an "H" after the "W" and added "No Ta I'd rather have a bit of cod"

Apparently my posting was altered because of complaints of "racism"!

PC gone mad or what! I'm not even sure if the Welsh are a "race"

Let me see if I got this right. I fly my Rhodesian (now Zimbabwe) flag and no one will take offence although we defied Britain for 12 years, my wife flies her Welsh flag and my son the South African flag but our home is in England and we are proud to be living here. So do we fly a St Georges flag also or perhaps one from the local rugby club.

Personally I think it is silly to fly flags unless they represent the rally that you are on.

Well life is full of surprises, I never even realised that Ian Smith was a caravanner.
