Flooding on Tuesday, in the Var region of France has apparently affected campsites at Roquebrune, and Frejus, alongside the Argens river, with Camping L'Etoile d'Argens (and possibly others) under more than 1 metre of water during the height of the floods.

I don't have any more details, as yet (just a telephone message left for us late last night from our friends in France). Will post again if I hear any more.

Apparently Les Pecheurs is also affected - and there are several other campsites in the immediate vicinity, which I would imagine have had problems too. It would be an idea for anyone booked on sites in that area to check with the site, but I imagine not many reception offices are functioning at this stage, either.

Apparently Les Pecheurs is so badly damaged by the floods that they don't expect to be able to take visitors for the remainder of the 2010 season.

Check out the Alan Rogers website (and 'twitter') for up to date information on particular campsites. For anyone involved, my heart goes out to you - and I hope you found some solace and help from all those good people who are helping out in France. I understand offers of rooms, nappies, food, money, and other help has been forthcoming without prompting from all those lovely French people living nearby who have offered shelter to stranded campers.

For anyone else, I hope your site is undamaged and open - and that you will continue with your plans and help the region regenerate. It seems that these flash floods are becoming more common throughout Europe.

Update now on Alan Rogers website - number of sites listed as striken and closed indefinitely. I've been trying to ring l'etoile d'argens but constantly engaged. I've also emailed them.

Some of the campsites have been totally and completely devastated and won't even have electricity, or perhaps even a Reception block, let alone a working computer or phone.

There will be hundreds of people in the same situation, and I think you'll just have to wait and hope - but their records may have been totally destroyed - and even if computerised may not have been backed up off site.

If it were me I would be looking at alternative options, as you've only got to look at the photos and videos to see that it's unlikely some sites will be opening again this season.

Carwyn.

Who confirmed to you that it was closed?

I'm booked to go there 1st 2 weeks of Sept, but can't raise L'Etoile by phone or email, although the Frejus tourist office did reply by email, in response to my emailed question on how long they were likely to be out of action, to me yesterday to say that it would be closed for the rest of the season

George, the Syndicat d'Initative du Var (Tourist Information) have confirmed that L'Etoile will not be open for the remainder of this season. The campsite is totally destroyed, as indicated in my previous post, and may not even have a reception building, let alone electrity, a working telephone or computer booking system. If you can find any photographs you will see that the whole area alongside the Argens river is just a wasteland. Cars and caravans are piled up on top of each other, buildings are washed away, and the banks of the river look like a desert.

To be fair, I think you'll just have to start looking elsewhere for your September holiday this year. There is more information on the Alan Rogers website, and they are trying to keep up to date information.
