Folding camper toilet question

HI all. I'm considering getting a folding camper rather then another caravan, however there is one issue... night time toilet arrangements. A bucket is out of the question, it must be a porta potti, so...

Those of you who have / had a folding camper, isn't it a real pain putting up a toilet tent? Doesn't it make the set up / take down process much longer? What about in poor weather?

I know these might sound silly but I am actually serious. I do not wish to have to go to the toilet block every night at 3am! I've already got enough trouble trying to convince the girlfriend that a camper/caravan is a good idea ;-)

Incidently, I cannot afford to buy a camper with a toilet already in there.

Any help and advice greatly received.

Cheers

We used to have a toilet tent back in our folding camper days and found it an absolute doddle to put up: easily done by one person in about 5 minutes. The only problem was, our daughters refused to use it, because 'everyone knows why you are going in there'. Presumably their motives for trekking down to the toilet block in the middle of the night were much less obvious.

I do not know what type of camper you are looking at but is it possible to add an awning, and put the Porta Potti there? It is curious and amusing how we have become so easily offended. After all it is our grandparents generation etc who had the big 'potty' under the bed and nobody complained. In Edinburgh they used to htrow the contents out of the window and shouted 'Gardy Loo' which was Scottish French for 'beware the water'. Good idea of a drunk was singing outside your window though.

The type will depend on money but possibly an old Pennine pullman type. The awning *could* be used but I'd rather not.

Just as a side issue, aren't you silloueted in toilet tents?

thanks for the comments so far guys, please keep them coming.

cheers

I think you would only be visible in the TT if you had a very bright light in there! We never had anything more powerful than a small torch. We did have an awning with the folding camper, but that was quite a performance to put up. The toilet tent, on the other hand, was just a matter of slipping the canvas over a collapsible frame, and hammering in a peg or two for security.

Yes, you will be sillouetted if you have a lantern or torch. Can be 'fun' if you drop it. but then again who is likely to be looking at 3 am? I do not know, or wish to know your requirements at 3am, but the nearest hedge or tree may be an answer. Depending on where you are staying of course.

I also have to visit the loo during the night and in France I woke up my wife to come outside at 2am. She thought I was mad until I pointed out the sky. The stars were absolutely amazing, I have never seen so many as the sky was so clear, unlike polluted UK. She was impressed as well and I did not get an earful for waking her up. So, maybe you could do a bit of stargazing as well.

The easy answer is to get a pitch near the facilities and walk over.

I remember the stunning stars at night when I visted France too. Here in West Wales we do get more starlight then when I lived in Southamtpon but it still doesn't compare to across that channel!

Perhaps in my case taking a torch in the night might be a very good idea... The angle of the light might just help improve areas of me that could do with that extra inch or two ;-)
