Morning everyone. I've been looking for a towcar to replace my existing 1.7D Astra Estate. I need an estate type care for dog/allotment/uni student carrier as well as towing my 2006 Elddis Avante 362 caravan. Weight of loaded van is 1100 but I'd like to tow better than 85% and also want a car that will give me good milage on its own. Any comments?

If the Astra is roomy enough, get a newer Astra estate with the 1.9CDTi engine - if you want something bigger the Vectra estate is also available with the 1.9CDTi.

Note that the Vauxhall 1.9 cdti engine comes in 2 variants, one is 8-valve 120PS, and the second is 16-valve 150PS. The second is excellent on a Vectra and would be even better on the lighter Astra!!

Forgot to say - fuel consumption on the Vectra 1.9cdti 150PS about 50mpg solo and 35mpg towing 1200kg.
I've just been to local ford dealer to look at the C-max 2 TDCI and will be taking it for a test drive. Reading other comments on it as a tow car I know I'll not have a problem with weight but am a little concerened that quite a few people have commented that the clutch is a little light and can smell when reversing. I also get this on my astra estate and have to be very lightfooted. I know I could never tow the van off if it was wet with my present towcar.

The 120PS engine can be 8- or 16-valve, depending on fitment - the 150PS engine is always 16-valve.
