Just wondered what we are towing with our Kuga , my max weight is 1500kgs , any body towing anything heavier and how is it pulling , I'm thinking of changing vans to a Swift which is 1610 kgs max ... any thoughts ?
Cheers
If your max is 1500 then seek a van which is around 85% of the kerbweight but definitely NOT exceeding the 1500. This is the margin set by the manufacturer for your vehicle and towing over this would put you at risk of invalidating your insurance.
What is the kerb weight of the Kuga as this is more important than the towing capacity in most cases. The towing capacity is nothing more than the weight the car can restart on a 12% hill. When towing at modest speeds around town the weight can be managed but on a motorway with the high sides of a caravan and possible crosswinds you need to look more at the safety aspect. It is illegal to exceed the makers limit though.
The general towing advice is that beginners do not tow more than 85% of the kerb weight and even experienced towers keep below 100%. Personally as someone who investigated accidents I would set the limit at 95% at the most. The Kuga is generally regarded as a good tow car but not knowing exactly what model you have and the kerb weight it is difficult to say if it is likely to be a good combination. I am assuming 1500 kg is what you are towing now and that 1650 is within the makers towing allowance.
You might also look at the engine you have as there are various ones available and the performance will depend on what you have.

Further to the other comments already made, I would ask have you checked your Driving Licence, as I suspect the teh combined MAM of the Kuga and caravan will need entailment BE or B+E to legally to it.
