Afternoon forum.

Arrived at a CAMC site this morning and pitching on a hardstanding.
Trying to pitch our new awning but haven’t been able to peg it down. I have rock-pegs and a drill, but I can’t get the pegs more than a few cm into the ground.
On grass, fine. No issues.

So I’m wondering, am I doing it wrong?! Or does my drill not have enough to do the job?!

Any tips would be gratefully received!

Thanks

Do you have a decent hammer? Often the “screw spiral” will not have enough bite to screw into the substrate or if it does a drill might not have adequate torque. I always used a hammer.

Only been on hardstanding twice and never been a problem but as ever the advice offered will be squirreled away for future use. Thanks to all.

On a few occasions I have found the CAMC hard standings so hard that even when using a lump hammer, the pegs will not go in and end up being bent and they are n ot cheap rock pegs. I then started carrying a masonary bit with us for the drill and made pilot holes and then used screw pegs.

I use screw pegs and if hard going, put the drill also on hammer. I do also carry a 300 mm long masonry drill as a last resort to get peg in but very rare to need it.

I must admit that generally we have only had the issue when using CAMC sites so not sure what they do to make the hard standing so very hard. LOL! :D

If the hard stang area is that solid I wouldn't bother with an awning, they are not compulsory

Very seldom use the club sites, too expensive and not in the areas we want to go to.

Problem is that by the time you find out, the awning is already on the caravan and just needs to be pegged down so you go ahead with the struggle.

Yep that is why we stopped using them preferring commercial sites in more accessible locations and better pricing. However last year in August we had to do a last minute booking at CAMC New Forest and the price for August was very reasonable. I wondered why? Strangely we were also able to book a pitch with all the services i.e. water and waste water hook ups. I guess that explains a lot.

I tend to look at the ground , then my brain says to the body , try putting a rock pegs in first, before putting up the awning on the caravan,
Unless of course SWMBO says otherwise.

Same problem a few years back - was told-off for trying to drill a hole "into their lovely new hard surface" so always stay on grass now, best of luck though. Les
