Thanks for the comments everyone; relieved to find I’m not doing it wrong!
I’m going to get myself a lump hammer, and also probably upgrade from a drill to an impact driver. Bit more torque in a driver.
Also considering getting some shorter hex-screws and replacing some of the longer rock pegs.

Thanks again; love this forum 👍
We bought coach screws plus suitable size washers from Screwfix. You get 50 in a box for a lot less than you pay for caravan specific screwpegs. I shared the box with my BIL>

Have you considered Peggy Pegs?
The starter kit even comes with two masonry drills for really tough surfaces.
They are brilliant in sandy soils too.
And, before someone points it out, they aren't cheap but, they work as advertised.

Are they plastic? No way will plastic work in heavy rock. Can they be hammered in with a Hutch four pounder?

Why spend a fortune when you can get the masonary bit and 50 coach screws with washers from Scewfix for less than £20? Okay you do not get a pretty box or bag with them, but you have £60 in your pocket.

Hard standing types vary wildly, on some they're quite sandy and while the pegs go in easily, they don't really "bite" so you end up using two in a crossed formation. Then there's some that require pounding to get it and double the force to remove!

We got a 'Thor dead blow Hammer'. A tad expensive at £30+ but gets you started and then use the drill attachment on our screw pegs to get them seated fully in. The benefit to the screw pegs is it is then so easy to remove them with the drill again.
