Jim,
I have the 4WD version - tows my Avondale like a dream (at 1400 kg about 87% of the Kugas kerbweight). A great motor and very pleased with it. Check out

for plenty of good info

Jim,
Surely you should do the research and ask the questions before you buy the car. Unless you have the spare money to change the caravan afterwards that is? I'm not saying this as an insult to you, it could be you have no choice in the car purchase if it is a company car?

Sorry for the delay in posting a reply
I have been avoiding Forums for a while as I grew tired of the negativity
I have the 2WD Kuga Titanium with lots of extras as it was a low mileage (3000) Ford Direct Car
In 1963 I had a new Ford Cortina with 47 faults on delivery and it got worse so I haven't had another Ford until this year
The Kuga has been totally trouble free and tows our Bailey California as well as the X Trail did and slightly better if anything
The 136bhp engine is very smooth and the gear change is superb
The torque is the same as the 150 bhp X Trail
The wheelbase is longer than the X Trail and the track is wider than the XT
The suspension and ride are excellent and towing stability benefits from a short rear overhang
I paid £20000 for it but there was something missing when I got it home
There were no rear drive shafts so back to the dealer and £750 refund
I decided to stick with the 2WD version as the X Trail was normally in 2WD anyway
After less than a week of ownership we towed the van to Brittany
We live at the top of a very steep hill from one direction and there are lots of leaves in the gutters at the moment
I managed to make the nearside wheel spin on purpose to see what would happen
The anti skid system (ESP)soon kicked in
I've changed the radio head unit for one that has sat nav and rear view screen etc
If we have another bad winter I may regret not having 4WD but so far the car is superb and we really love it

I hope that you like yours as much as we do

Believe me I wouldnt order without doing my research on its technical ability, weights power etc and on paper it fits the bill. It is nice however to guage the reaction of people who have had one and used it

BTW it is also a company car

Hi John Thanks for the detailed reply. Just out of curiosity did you have any issues with the split charge electrics. I have had a factory fitted towbar but Ford have refused to fit the split feed saying it upsets the electrics????

I had my towbar fitted by a local fitter and it was arranged by the Ford main agent
It was wired for 13 pin
They wired the fridge and charging circuit direct from the battery as tried and tested
They use a voltage sensing relay which I have since changed for 4 pin old style relay because I prefer them
This was because when I use the fridge circuit to power up my rear view camera it worked OK until I hooked up the van
It became obvious that the voltage sensing relay was hunting like mad as the camera kept going on and off as the relay was affected by the load from the fridge
There was an article on the Kuga Owner's website with pics of where to connect to an ignition controlled source and I used that
Now no "hunting" on the camera pic and also presumably the fridge
If its done like described above it has no effect on the car electrics especially if the voltage sensing type is used as no connection is made other than to the battery
Any towbar fitter should be able to do it easily

This shows how to wire the socket end
