Ford mondeo trailer fuses

Hi
Help please I'm new here, I have a 2006 Ford Mondeo 2L TDCi hatchback with which I tow an old Swift Challenger caravan (I've been towing for years). The 12N (black plug) set up (7 pin plug) works fine, however the grey 12S socket doesn't charge the battery or power the fridge when the car is running, multimeter shows no "power" reaching the grey socket. The 12S socket & plug have just been changed for new (this week) and the multi meter shows the 12S plug (grey) & the caravan side of things at the caravan fuse box are all working, so it must be something in the car. I removed the glove compartment to reach the auxillary fuse box & noticed the slots for 20A fuses for "trailers" (No. 74 & 92) are empty, Do I need to buy and fit 20A fuses in one or both of these slots? Additional info, the tow bar was fitted professionally (not by Ford) and the car doesn't have parking sensors & the caravan doesn't have reversing lights fitted. Help would be gratefully received, as a will be towing again within the week. Thanks :)

Hello festigirl,
I don't know the wiring of the Ford, so I can't be certain what each of the fuses is supposed to do., But providing no one has modified the wiring, there should be no harm in fitting them to see if they do give you power. However, you might be better checking with the company that fitted the tow bar, because they may have used alternative connections for the 7s socket.

Thank you, I will contact them, but it would explain why the car has never charged the caravan battery when travelling :)

hi
Just phoned the towbar company, refused to tell me without "looking" at the vehicle!

For much the same reason no forum member will be able to diagnose the problem with certainty, it needs hands on checking to establish why there is no power to the caravan. Given the circumstances I think the company is quite right not to offer any assurance over the phone, They would need to check the actual vehicle to see whats happened.
