Forum Upgrade - PLEASE READ

Morning all

As some of you may know we're going through a site redevelopment at the moment. One of the consequences of this is that you will all need a unique username - at the moment many of you only have your first name displayed when you post.

In order to ensure that you have a username that you actually want (as opposed to John931, which is what will happen if we have to migrate you over to the new forum without your having changed it), could you take some time to go into 'Profile' and select a nickname please?

You'll note that you won't be able to choose one that already exists, so you may have to be inventive :)

If you could do so in the next week or so, it would help me enormously.

regards

John Duncan

Hi John - Thank goodness for a new forum as this has been very pedestrian of late. However please spare a thought for us older contributers who are not so conversant with change in technology. Please try and make the new format idiot proof. As my father once said why can't society wait for us older people to die off before introducing new technology.

Well you can take a look at http://www.gramophone.co.uk/forum to see how it's going to work, because it's going to be the same as that. There are some differences to how it behaves compared to the current one, certainly, but hopefully designed to make conversations easier to follow - such as quoting posts rather than 'commenting' on them, which tends to hide some contributions.

And yes, search will work!

Anthony,Norn Ireland ;-)

You may wish to reconsider that monker when you find that you need to log in with it rather than your email on the new forum...

I thought we were having an upgrade, sorry but it looks more like a downgrade. No offence.

@John Duncan

John,

Seeing the "change resistance" posts made me smile, but there are a couple of points worth drawing attention to.

It might be worth noting that the Gramophone forum will not accept usernames with spaces. So, notwithstanding that I have selected what I think is a unique nickname, presumably it not work after conversion?

Note also that Gramophone requires full address details. Not all forum users may be happy with this. Arguably it's a fair enough request when providing a free service, but it's also arguable that under the DPA they're keeping information they don't need if the user has opted out of contact, as there's no need to have it to provide the service (Data Protection Principle 3). I guess demographics for analysis is legitimate but you don't need full address for that.

Of course subscribers could fake an address, which might cause Haymarket a different problem.

The forum itself appears to lack a threaded view, which means it doesn't really overcome the reply limitations of this one. Am I mistaken?

AP.
