My wife arrived back from seeing her brother in his care home and told me that as today was National Technology Day the activities Co-ordinator had arranged a quiz. One question to the residents was “what are the different road crossings in Britain and what are the differences?”

Wow what a surprise when my wife explained them to me as normally I only differentiate between Zebra and light controlled. But the subtle differences on light controlled crossings were an eye opener, with one giving cyclist the right to ride across. So Zebra, Puffin, Pelican and Toucan cover the spectrum. I think the light controlled ones could benefit from some rationalisation.

You forgot the other two, a Pegasus Crossing, and a school crossing. ie Lollipop person.
  • Pegasus Crossing: Also known as an equestrian crossing, this type is for horse riders as well as pedestrians. They have a red/green horse symbol on the light panel and a higher-mounted push button for riders to activate from horseback. They often feature wider crossing spaces and operate with sensors like Puffin and Toucan crossings.

Yes there is one on the A350 near to a large garden Center. Never seen it used by anyone with or without a horse.

What about Level Crossing?

If you drive along the A66 near Warcop you'll seen a sign for Tank Crossing. Nearer the M6 end there's a light controlled crossing for cows but I don't know many that could get their hoofs up to the button.

I'm also sure I've seen controlled crossings for cars when an aircraft runway or strip is intersected by a road.

The latter was certainly true - not sure if any still exist - the crossing at RAF Bitteswell existed in the '80s but long ago disappeared under Magna Park distribution centre near Lutterworth.

That would be Gibraltar Airport (which is technically in Spain!)
