France and Telepeage

We are travelling down to Nice from St Malo later this year - using the toll roads. Is it possible to get a Telepeage card for use - including our car and caravan. We will also be using our car solo whilst on site so want something that will cover this as well. It would be much easier than carrying all that change etc!

Hi Paul,

The website 'autoroure.fr' has an english version and you will learn all you need to know about the autoroute network. There is asection on the Telepeage but I think I am correct in saying it is reserved for Class 1 (i.e. not whilst towing.

As Phil said it's possible to get a telepeage card. You set up an account and can pay monthly for the times you use it. However, as Phil says, you can only go through the automatic tolls if you're a Class 1 (solo car) - there are height barriers to stop anything high. You can use the telepeage card at the normal toll booths to pay the toll, but you may as well use a credit card. I've got the Telepeage card and it works very well for a solo car, but never tried it at normal booths with the caravan attached as we try to avoid toll autoroutes.

Hi Paul,

Most, if not all, of the french autoroute companies can provide you with Telepeage badges ("Liber-T"). The problem is mostly about setting up the automatic payment of the monthly bill.

SANEF are most popular with UK drivers because they run the sections of autoroute nearest the eastern channel ports. SANEF will provide you with a badge for class 1 use (i.e. a car or a car with a low trailer) and are happy to debit your visa or mastercard account.

ALIS are more flexible in that they will also supply badges for class 2 use (i.e. car and caravan), but they will not do Visa or Mastercard and so you have to have a French bank account. Apperently they are happy with you having a badge for class 1 use and another one for class 2 use, you just have to sign up twice.

Here is their link -

Irrespective of which company supplies the badge, you can use it across the whole French autoroute network.

If anyone is very interested in this topic there is a long, but informative, thread on this forum -

Hi John - I've just got a telepeage 'badge' from SANEF - what do you do the first time you use it? Do I take the ticket that pops out of the machine or not....?!!
