Many of the coastal sites do close down at the end of September - and seaside towns tend to 'shut', meaning that many facilities are not available. You'd probably be better at an inland site. I can recommend La Citadelle, at Loches, in the Loire, or Le Croix du Vieux Pont at Berny Riviere, near Soissons. Both of these are open in early October, and both taking Camping Cheques, so

Hi Deli Dave

You will need to do a bit of forward planning before you go as many sites close by 15th September and even some that show a later closing date may well be closed if the weather isn't good. We had the problem last year in the Dordogne when we tried to get a site near Sarlat just after mid September. It took four attempts to find one that was actually open - and then it wasn't a brilliant site. Also, even if the site is 'open', many of it's facilities may not be and 'places of interest' in the area may also be closed.

Having said that, all the crowds will have gone home and at sites that are open you may well have the place pretty much to yourself. The weather can be anything at that time of the year (a bit like this summer !!) but one thing is for certain, the days will be shorter.

If seaside is not important, try the municipal at Obernai in Alsace, about 20 miles SW of Strasbourg. Good site open all year (Manager was a French student (teacher?) at Dudley Grammar School so is even proficient at swearing in English!) Beautiful countryside, plenty to see, Obernai is walking distance (10mins) from site, good local wine. Germany is about 10 miles away and a good day (or two) out.)

You can even get there by Belgian and/or German motorways which are free.

Have a look here www.caravanningfrance.com British Owned site south of Saumur which is lovely and very popular. Accepting ACSI Cards this year 14Euros a night off season for 2 people/van/electric. Expensive without the card but it is like a Caravan Club Site in France and people return over and over again.
