I have been planning a trip to France and Italy with a tourer, starting 1st week Sept and returning at the end of Oct (we are retired and can do this sort of thing). It will be our first time abroad with avan altho' we have driven solo many times in the past.

I am astonished to read on the net and elsewhere that sites close down end Sept or early Oct. Are we going to have problems in October? Should I give up the idea and go to Weston super Mare instead? (No offence, it's a nice place even without the pier). Advice from seasoned European travellers would be most welcome.

Its certainly difficult to find open sites in parts of France at that time of year, but if you use any well known guide like the CC Bible (Camping Europe 1 & 2) you will find them.

I have never been to Italy so late in the year, but look at http://www.camping.it/ as it may give dates of closure.

I have done France and sometimes Spain in September /October for a few years and its true that from mid september onwards some start closing but if you keep an eye on the opening times in the guide it wont be a problem. Dont let it put you off, you could make a much bigger mistake and go in august and find them open but full
