France, west coast routes

Would there be any advatage / disadvantage of travelling Dover/Calais over Portsmouth/Caen when towing to the west coast of France - destination the La Rochelle region? This is taking into consideration time, fuel costs, ferry costs. I live closer to Dover that to Portsmouth plus the ferries are more regular from Dover. We have always travelled Portsmouth/Caen but I am wondering if this is the best route, I find the autoroute tolls are virtually non-existant on,(I think the A83), around 8 euro's each direction.

For La Rochelle area we always use Portsmouth/St Malo overnight. Gives you a good early start and you can be pitched for mid afternoon.
