'free' camping

Hi ,
I'm a former member & have just rejoined after a year without an outfit but will soon be buying another motorhome.
In 2008/9 we travelled in England & Scotland but mostly throughout France & Italy where we used sites but often used the aires in France which were very convenient & of course free or very cheap.
We'd like to do something similar in this country but understand that free or wild overnight parking is often discouraged.
Does anyone have any info. on the possibility wild camping ? Generally in this country we use CL sites.

Thanks, Bazza

I think with the exception of some parts of Scotland, "wild" camping is not discouraged as such, it is prohibited by local bye laws, and the fact that all land is owned by someone, who must give consent for you to park up overnight.
