Freeview TV

This maybe have been on here before but I cant seem to find it. Can somebody tell me the ins and outs of buying and using a freeview box in the caravan. Do you use a normal aerial or need a specialised one and can you get good reception on wherever you go in the UK. Thanks in advance.

We use our free view box in the caravan mostly through the status ariel, but in areas of poor reception we have an outside ariel and a 12volt booster. It is surprising howmuch clearer the picture is through free view. It is worth checking the Freeview web site as freeview is not available yet ibn some areas.

You do need a good signal to get freeview, so to get the best freeview reception you need a wideband aerial, I have just started using FV and the picture quality is excellent. I have had no luck with the status aerial so had to buy a Vision plus image 530 and mounting pole, both very easy to erect.

As for the box, the Hauppauge DEC1100T is very small, good quality and only

yes you need a decent ariel,i found problem with reception (not every day, dover kent)with my status ariel(crap really)when using digi box.somedays it was great others could not get good signal.must get an external ariel for certain areas

I have tried using a Freeview box (Sagem) with the Status aerial standard on last years Bailey. The results generally haven't been good so I am considering a satellite dish.

On CC sites with aerial sockets for ordinary TV I don't seem to be any better, perhaps There's another problem.

Has anyone experience of satellite?

Phil

I have the perfect solution to all this. Just leave the TV at home and find something else to do!!!!!

Hi,

I originally had a status, which to be honest, when it came to finding a signal in most areas, was like finding a needle in a haystack the size of the South America!

I took some friends advise and purchased an Omnimax.

This seems to get a good picture everwhere we've been so far!

You can get these for around

Thanks for all your advice, we finally went with the Sagem supported by a wide band aerial and we're very pleased with the result. Just before leaving for our destination I look on the freeview web-site and find out in advance if the particular area does freeview and 99% of the time so far we have been successful. Once again, thanks very much for the advice.

Hi

Having bought a Freeview box to use in our caravan at Whitby only to find it did not work I would advise checking the website.

I have also been told if you can get channel 5 then you should be able to get Freeview. I do not know if this is correct but I cannot get C5 in Whitby and therefore no Freeview.

Go for the Hauppauge one - it actually runs on 12v (it's supplied with a 12v mains adaptor) and its very compact.

You can find good deals on eBay.

Freeview - digital terrestrial television DTT - needs the same sort of aerial as analogue reception but is more sensitive to signal strength.

In strong signal areas, a few miles from a transmitter, the Status may be ok but MOST of the UK needs an amplified extra high gain aerial. Caravan aerials, even directional ones, have very limited application. Argos & Maplins sell a choice but they are quite large to store in the caravan.

Satellite may well be a better option, eithe freesat from Sky or the upcoming Freesat from ITV/BBC.
