Can anyone recommend small sites in France. We would like to visit the Verdon Gorge and the Southern Alps. We like to go onto CL type sites that are clean and tidy and with walks around the area if possible. We are going in June 2011.

Can't help you particularly with southern Alps but for Verdon look at Camping a la ferme Vauveniers in the CC book under Moustiers by actually just north of Riez. CL type on organic farm, Dutch run, english spoken, admid the lavender fields and much quieter than the sites at Moustiers itself. It's on a dead end road to St Jurs and has plenty of good grass pitches with a limit to the number of outfits wheich can be accepted. In early september there were just 3 of us. Shopping in Riez or for more / better / bigger Digne les Bains to the north. I would certainly go back there - and may indeed do so in about 12 months time.

A bit further north the municipal at Sisteron is very good too, but tends to be a transit site at some seasons.

We loved the market in Riez, too - I think it was mid-week, but a really nice mix of pottery, food and vegetables, and 'interesting things'.! At the top of the hill overlooking the town there's a little nunnery with a chapel, and we had a picnic on the grassy area outside. The nuns were singing beautifully in the chapel, and it was a really magical day!
The Valensole plateau is fantastic in lavender season - you can actually smell the lavender in the air for miles around, and the lavender honey is just wonderful.
The Gorges du Verdon area is lovely - but busy in high season, so if you're driving around the Gorge then make an early start.
