French Police Scam !

Been informed that UK drivers headed for chanel ports are being pulled over by Police, who demand payment for a speeding offence committed close to the ferry port.
No proof offered on the spot, but an appeal my be lodged if prepared to go to police station.
If you are prepared to go to the Police station to make a challenge, the time taken will ensure your booked ferry/train will be missed.
So, taking the path of least resistance to ensure travel continues without additional delay means you pay up and Police are happy to take your money.
How do you sort that out ??

Are you sure they are the real police? Or crooks dressed up to scam?

Edit - similar story here

I agree, more likely to be crooks dressed as police. You're no more likely to be scammed by police in France than you are in the UK.

if this is indeed true then i would assume like the other story from the link, details will be on the french police Facebook page? and given the police presence near to the ports one would suspect if it is a scam by crooks they are indeed brave to be going around impersonating the French police.. personally i would be surprised if this story was true,at this time of year every year stories seem to do the rounds on one foreign police force or the other targeting the brits.! why is it always the brits ? not the Germans or the Italians or the swedes ...

Because they've all been rendered unconscious by sleeping gas pumped in through their caravan vents. 😉

Sounds like a scam by crooks to me. You need to see their identity badges and say you want to ring their station if you have any doubts.

Probably quite true. Why shouldn't it be? Speeding on UK motorways is rife. You only need set your cruise to 72mph then see how many vehicles overtake at such a speed that you look to see if your cruise has slipped down to 55mph. Drivers get away with it because one hardly ever sees police on our motorways. Not so in France, they actively patrol the peages with motorbike patrols and consequently they catch speeders.
