Fresh water level guage - any ideas?

I took delivery of a Marquis Majestic 135 on January 25th. With the current mild spell I thought I'd fill water tank and just familiarise myself with how things work (first motorhome after 11 years caravanning), all ok except for the water tank level guage. I know the fresh water tank was full (water from overflow) and I did remove tank access cover to check water level after turning water tap off. But the water guage was showing about a quarter full. I have no idea how they work. Does anyone have any ideas. Obviously I will be contacting Marquis about this.

Some vans you need to calibrate the full and empty setting at first use. Your handbook should tell you.

Just a quick update on the problem with my fresh water level guage.
I took motorhome in to dealers service centre last week and the guage was fixed.
The guage was re-calibrated and all seems five now.
Thank you for your interest and advice.
PS at the same time they fixed the solar panel which had not been connected and the missing decals on the off-side had been affixed plus a new concertina blind fitted to the cab windscreen.
Taking van in to a local Peugeot dealer tomorrow (12th) for them to have a look at the radio, AM and FM working fine but DAB wont even connect to waveband.
