Fresh water storage

Only had our first caravan a couple of weeks and have had one weekend away. Very new to this! I am wondering if I should clean the water hog after use with any special cleaner. Wife is a bit paranoid about drinking bugs next time we go out! Please advise! Thanks

Ian, if your next trip is quite soon, just rinse the hog out with clean water.

If you are not going away for some time, and to satisfy any misgivings, a wash with a Milton solution will clear any problems.

Make sure you rinse it well after using Milton though!!.

TBH, Ian we never drink the water and always buy bottled. For some reason (or it might be just me) the water tastes ukkk.

Ok for washing or showering or cleaning teeth, crap for drinking and making tea.🙂

We also use milton to flush our water hogs every once in a while.

Would you drink out of a bucket that had been lying in your garden for a fortnight. We only drink bottled water or water from the drinking points.

Your supermarket will offer a much cheaper "own brand" version of Milton. As this is a simple chemical solution, the only differentiating factor between brands being price.

We have always drunk the water from the Aquaroll without problems. No, I wouldn't drink from a bucket in the garden, but I will drink from a sealed, sterilised container regularly refilled with fresh tap water.

A while back, I noticed reading the Milton bottle, that they give a dosage to make water safe to drink - haven't tried drinking it- but we always add that much to the water container anyway to keep it fresh, smells a little chlorinated.

Each time we go out a spot of steraliser goes in 1st aqua roll fill up After that none as it will corrode the water tank if not washed through thoroughly so this does 2 jobs at once

We carry 2 x 4 litre containers for drinking/Tea making and cooking water .. Only use water out of tap for washing/washing up

All water contains "bugs" and other impurities, it's just the numbers of bugs that are different.

Some plastics leach material into the water, which can either have a plasticky taste or a much stronger TCP taste - and sometimes the taste comes from the mains water.

And the ability to taste odour components is an inherited, genetic, facility - and does vary enormously between people. And if like me, you're super-sensitive to the TCP taint - it's bottled water only

Hi Ian,

As others have said I would never now drink water from a inboard tank or Aquaroll.

I always sterilize the aquaroll and pipes regularly, however once when the water pump packed up I had to strip it down to try to make work. The black slimy mould inside the pipe looked disgusting and I made my mind up only to drink bottled water.

The water pump was less than 12 months old and as I have stated was regularly sterilized.

Notice no-one has mentioned in-line filters. I clean out the aquaroll and pipes regularly, but also have a big in-line filter (Filterpac) which has activated charcoal and takes all the chlorine etc. out. Some pump connectors have filters built-in as standard, although i think the replacements are more expesnive than a single large filter.

But I agree- bottled water for the real essentials - tea and ice for the G&T

We use a product called Kemdirect descaler/cleaner.

Not only does it clean our pipes it also descales so we feel they are completely clean and free from germs and bacteria.

Also we do not have the after taste as we had with milton and similar products.

When you wash or do your pots you also wish to feel that the water is clean as you are eating off these and consuming some of the water especially when cleaning teeth.

I sometimes use bottled water as I do not always like the taste of water in different pasts of the country. But I want to know that the water in my pipes and tank is fit to drink and consume if I wish to. Joyce

i purchased one of the filter jugs the thin style it fits into the fridge door not only do you get filterd water but its always nice & cold to drink

We agree with Diane. We only use the site water for washing, we NEVER drink site water. We buy bottled water for drinking. During the height of the summer, we refill our bottled water bottles from our own home tap before leaving home, so at least we can get a few decent cups of tea on the way to our chosen site.
