Front Towball

I have seen some of the above type of fitment that gives you the advantage when trying to site the caravan into tight spots.

I keep mine at the side of the house on the driveway and it is quite neat to say the least. When it is parked there is just enough room for the neighbours to get access for their wheelie bins etc, also, the driveway has an upward slope towards the road. The method i have come up with is that when we come back from a holiday, i phone my brother in law who is only two doors away, he is then there to greet us and along with the wifey, we unhitch and push the caravan into the drive.

Getting out is no problem, i reverse the car into the drive and can pull out safely with no bumps.

Anyway, after seeing these front mounted towbars, it got me thinking, i have a vauxhall vectra which has a built in device for a towing bracket on the front of the chassis below the bumper.

This is a threaded keeper that can accomodate a towing eye and such like, is there any suppliers out there that have a screw in towball that would suffice for what i want ?.

I wonder what the legal position is on front tow bars/balls? To me if the vehicle is modified to fit such a contraption a) there is a safety consideration-vehicles are supposed to be pedestrian friendly and b) an insurance consideration -would you get insurance for such a modification?

I suspect whilst the vehicle is use on site and not on the public highway it might be okay. I recall under the old Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations mascots were not allowed. I think a front tow ball that is fixed and used on the public highway might contravene road traffic legistlation

As the solution suggested here is only a temporary fitment while the caravan is being manoeuvred and an already existing attachment point is being used, Construction and Use Regulations are not affected.

Cheers Lutz,

thanks for clearing up the point about legal issues, jesus, i am only pushing it into of my driveway, am no goin to belt down the main street pushing the caravan from a towball on the front, that would certainly draw attention.

aye Lutz, the link worked this time, but it was worthless in realation to ma post. so here we go, is there any companies out there that supply a screw in type towball to fit my vauxhall vectra so that i can push the caravan into the drive ?.

if there aint any, then i will get together with my brother in law who is an engineer and builds fire engines for a local company and make myself a wee fortune, the front towball method for carrying out the tasks that i have said will be a winner.
