Front Window Seals

I have done a front end rebuild on my van and now i am ready to put the window seals on around the frame work, Do i put the seals on and then staple to the wooden frame work?or do i put sealer in the seal itself and then staple,Many thanks.

Hi Eddie,

I did my front windowns last autumn. When re-assembling, I used the 'ribbon' type mastic from a roll and I applied this around the window aperture - mainly in the recess but a small amount folded over the outside edge of the front panel. Next, I carefully placed the clean seal over the mastic, ensuring all of the screw holes lined up and then firmly pushed into place, especially in the corners. I used a piece of old broom shank to 'roll' over the seal to flatten down like a rolling pin. Once pushed fully into place the 2 ends of the seal should meet and touch with no surplus. I then stapled the seal into position with a staple gun, firing through into the frame. Finally the capping strip was re-inserted, the hinges and stays re-fitted and all adjusted to ensure a good all round seal between the window itself and the rubber seal.

I'm not saying that this is the only way or the correct way to do this job but it's the way I did it based on some information that I had read. Hope it helps?

Good Luck!

Not the Simon from the earlier damp thread, although I also had damp around the front windows. However, although my van is also 1999, it is a Compass Rallye and at 6 years old (at the time of the repair)I didn't expect it but there you go. Incidentally, I've also had to repair a floor de-lamination and re-seal both awning rails. Still, hopefully the van will now be OK for a few years, although I'll be keeping a watchful eye as you never know. Always expect the unexpected!

I fitted a rear window from scratch in our Ace Jubilee Statesman and the seal came with a layer of mastic on it.

You have to get the right size or it will kink on the corners

I installed it but couldn't get my staple gun to fire through the thick rubber so I pre drilled and used short roofing felt nails !!

I then went round the outside of the rubber seal with silicone sealer in a mastic gun, inserting the nozzle under the rubber.

The excess was wiped round so as to overlap with a bead on silicone on the outer edge.
