Heard today that should the Lib Dems get into power they will increase "Environment Taxes". The BBC Commentator said will this mean increasing the tax on Petrol Guzzlers, I think I am correct in saying the spokesperson for the Libs said something like " we will be reducing the rate of " Income Tax by 2p in the pound "

Do these numties not understand when they reduce the Income Tax and raise Fuel Tax all it means is I will spend the reduction in the one tax, on buying the more expensive Fuel. If as they say this will be Tax Neutral how will this save the environment ??

Whilst I am not an avid fan of the Lib Dems, or any other self serving party for that matter, the reduction in Income Tax woul dbenefit a lot of people, and those who wish to drive more, pay more, and hos who have vehicles which consume lots of fuel, pay even more, but its YOUR choice, whereas Income Tax is levied across the board, to car drivers, and non car drivers.

And,,,,,,before this ends up as some kind of anti thread, its not just 4X4s that consume lots of fuel to run them.

As for saving the environment, well,is ANY government going to do that? I doubt it very much, and its not really this country which is the main polluter, the USA produce 1/4 of ALL pollution, leaving the other 3/4 spread across the world.

I agree with all the posts above and would add one further point.

People on low pay already often pay more tax as fuel tax as they do in Income Tax!

Thus the young trying to get on the housing ladder for the first time or trying to get a better job or trying to improve their prospects by attending college will be hit proportionaly more by such a numpty suggestion from the Lib Dems.

I doubt they have worked this out:

One element of the Lib Dems proposal makes partial sense - to apply fuel tax to airline travel - but it couldn't be applied unless all the major economies agreed. Airlines would just "fill 'er up" outside the UK!

Any further increase in fuel duty, already one of the highest in the world, won't just hit "gas guzzlers", it'll hit all of us.

It's just a theoretical point to debate, there's no chance of them getting a power sharing coalition, let alone actually gaining power.

What came to my mind was these guys have no basic idea of either arithmetic or common sense i.e. reduced income from fuel duty and reduce income tax as well. So where are we going to reduce our public spending ????

Roger,

As for the policy on airlines the policy would be probably implemented in Air Passenger Duty increases say from the current
