Well after 5 years of usage we've had to change the gas bottle if we wanted dinner tonight.

Limited availability where we are but managed to get a 6kg propane from Morrisons at just over £41.

At home we use 19kg bottles at £56 a go. Better value but won't fit the front locker.

We have 2x6kg that came with the van, still on the first bottle with a full one to go. being sasonal we are allowed 2 bottles and can go to 19kg. Avanti gas seems the best in Somerset wher the van is. But they have no customer vacancies. We have a problem in that our gas locker is on the side, and we have no room there for a bottle outside. I could put it at the front, but thats a long way to run a high pressure line, so i am not comfortable with that.

My plan B is to get a 10kg gaslight. I think it will fit in the locker. I also think I have found. Supplier that will swap my Flogas 6kg for the 10kg bottle. A bit of a minefield.

Flogas policy is to leave pricing to their retailers.

Flogas seem to have made significant inroads into Calors market around our area and their outlets also generally sell the lightweight gaslights too. Guess it’s still Calor on local sites though.

I would warn viewers to be VERY careful if proposing to change to a gaslight of either size. The are quite a lot bigger diameter that a 6kg Propane Calor or Flogas. Metal is 256mm, gaslight is 305mm or about two inches.

We have a Unicorn Deluxe which has space for two bottles but one sits lower than the other because of the offside wheel A gaslight will not fit either position.

Also recently changed a 6kg gas bottle at Morrisons. It used to be the cheapest local place so we didn’t shop around. About fell over when it cost £42.

Looking on the Facebook Alicanto group. Some even get 2 x 10kg Gaslights in. I would only want 1, with a 6kg as a reserve. But they have had to alter the floor bracket and upgrade the strap. Not too important for me as the van is going nowhere.

But other people on that group say it will not fit. I know i need to check in in more detail.

I fit a 10kg and 5kg gas-lite (Flowgas) in the side locker on my Unicorn S3 Vigo. If the locker is the same size - you are good.

Recently I had to buy a 13kg Calorgas Patio gas bottle and the cost was just over £90. I think the refill cost is about £55! Not sure if you can buy the "refillable" Patio gas bottles?

You can of course use a Safefill or its competitors, eg Gaslow as a patio LPG bottle, just use the right adaptor and regulator to suit the appliance being fed from it.

I just exchange my Calor patio gas cylinder for a full one. Can’t recall the price but as it’s only used for the Cadac BBQ at home it’s not worth shopping around to save a few bob as I just buy at a local camping outlet. Most of our BBQs this year have been on the charcoal fired Weber kettle that I treated myself to early in the summer.

6kg Propane Calor exchange at our local builders merchants is £28. As we don't have mains gas at home, we have a couple of 47Kg bottles that only supply the house cooker hob, I use Flow Gas for these, £75 a go. It is possible to fill a 6kg bottle from the cheaper 47Kg, not done it my self, the danger doing it in a DIY way is that the bottle gets over filled; they require some volume for expansion, it would though make the price of a 6kg refill around £10!

We do have a907 2.72kg Capmingaz bottle with fittings that can be used in an emergency (for France) , I did get a refill in France last year only €24 exchange, I don't know if campingaz is normally that much cheaper in France or if I got lucky?

My experience is that it is hugely beneficial price wise to exchange bottles at builders merchants rather than leisure retail outlets. Not only is their asking price better, some will sign you up for a "trade" discount , for the asking, making it even cheaper.
Those in the building trade are not going to pay the specially inflated prices the rest of us are treated to.

On the Weber it invalidates the warranty although I am not sure how they would prove a different gas was used. I used the incorrect term refillable as should have said exchanged i.e. Homebase or Flogas cylinder which may be cheaper than Calorgas.

Obviously we sue our new Weber BBQ quite a lot and will continue to do so over the winter months which is one of the reasons why we switched from our Weber charcoal BBQ to the gas. We have the Weber 47" and also the smaller Smoky Joe. We can take the Smoky Joe with us when renting cottages, but the 47" will become redundant.

In my experience Campingaz was cheaper in France but we “ managed” with taking two 6kg propane. One for the caravan, the other for a gas bbq.

Nor am I as they simply could not, its all the same Propane and even if you ran it on Butane I don't think in a month of Sundays they would, nor probably could make that an issue.

By coincidence we have a Smokey Joe and it goes on trips with us. Great piece of kit.

Many years ago a friend, who was a gas safe engineer and trainer, had the idea of making his own refill kit. It involved a fridge compressor. It never came about. And as he died 20 years ago, no chance now.

I checked on their website before just to confirm the price, perhaps if you Google "bottled gas suppliers" some local retailer may have it,My son has a static and that costs an arm and a leg for a refill/refit

Also how can we be sure we're buying a full charged cylinder when we do the swap over?
As I have, weigh it and deduct its quoted Tare weight.

Then its a decision whether you challenge the supplier.
I chose to bite my lip and retain my good relationship, confident its shortfall was not their fault and certainly not their trying it on.

Plus, the hassle to transport it back to exchange was anything but cost effective.

I have also had one leaking at the valve into the bottle joint, that got returned as it was evidently unsafe like that, and needed flagging up to the wholesaler.
