Gas bottles.

Now that the Calor gas lites are slowly disappearing, I want to always have a spare bottle, so do I have to go and buy a small propane is it a 4.5 kg or do i carry a full Heavy bottle cutting down on my in van payload which I find is already up to its limits with the lesuire battery 25KG, The motor mover. 35 kg. On my caravan a 2013 560 VIP there is no leeway on a data plate. We already have the lightest things possible in the van. I wonder how overweight other folk must be. Must need a bigger car with more payload.

3.9kg or more commonly the 6kg propane is all you need. The latter is about 5kg heavier than the Lite. A few less beers in transit maybe 😛 :evil:

You’ve hit the nail on the head. I think one of the reasons I now see so many caravan couples with a newish van and large roof box is that the van payloads are too low. As the car is probably full they have to resort to a roof box. Like my own weight it’s a continued battle to ensure stuff isn’t allowed to creep into the van without a compensating removal.

I'm new to caravanning, after having had boats for 30 odd years, but why is the Calor gas lite disappearing?

I thought nothing of having two heavy bottles on the boat - one as spare. Weight just pushed the boat a bit lower in the water! I will definitely have to watch my weight in future. 😱hmy:

According to Calor the number being returned damaged is making using them unprofitable. Any damaged are now scrapped but the others are reused and will be replaced by a newer design in the future. The cylinders are not being withdrawn but the numbers are dropping steadily.

Depending on what you read re Calor the new bottle will not be available until Spring 2019. I have thought about changing to the Flogas composite cylinder (5kg propane) (ex BP Gaslight) but I'm not sure that their availability is very good as they are not shown on the Flogas UK website list of cylinder. yet they can still be purchased from Flogas in Ireland (Republic and NI). So I guess that I will stick it out until Calor amazes us. Even if I cannot exchange my Calorlite for a full one my local caravan outlet has it on record that I purchased a Calorlite, so when the new one comes out Calor have said they will allow standard 6kg propane to be exchanged for a new type cylinder if you have the rental agreement or proof of purchase.

Damaged how ? Mine gets put in , strapped in and secured and is there till its empty ?! It goes back looking as new as what i got it .

Some returns have been dented or gouged and cannot be re used. As most if not all are used by caravaners who don't tend to sling bottles around ,I suspect that the damage has been caused by careless handling at outlets, collection vehicles or depots.
