Gas cylinders

Hello

We currently have just one 7kg butane cylinder in the 'van which we have had in there since we bought it in Sept 2008 (we don't use a lot of gas!). I have been given a 15kg butane cylinder which I am about to swap for a 6kg propane cylinder. I know I have to get the correct fitting for the propane, but my question is, is this an easy job?

The 'van is in storage, and I cannot get over there to have a look in the gas locker (and for the life of me I can't remember what the fittings look like).

Oh, and the 'van is a 2005 Swift Celeste 19/6.

We're away for 6 nights next week, and I just know that the gas will finanlly run out this time - but I have been saying this to my wife for most of this year when we've been away, so probably wont cause a problem, but we're planning on a few nights away in October half term and it may well turn a bit chilly!

Neil,

Your 7kg Butane cylinder and the 15kg Butane cylinder uses a clip on regulator and incorporates the on/off gas valve whereas the Propane cylinder uses a screw in regulator. The Propane regulator has a left hand thread and screws into the on/off gas valve which is part of the cylinder. Fitting the regulator to the cylinder is straight forward but you may want to take professional advice to change the hose.

According to Calor you cannot exchange 15kg butane for 6kg Propane without a charge.

Hi Brodib0nce if your present butane clip on connecter will unscrew from the rubber pig tail you can buy a propane connecter that will screw on in its place other wise you will have to buy a complete propane pigtail see here http://www.gaslow.co.uk/pages/products/list_1.htm

The OP states the caravan is a 2005 model. These are fitted with bulkhead mounted regulator and uses pig tails to connect to the gas bottle.

Changing from one type of bottle to another requires the pigtails to be changed to one(s) of the right type.

I should have known that since I had a 2003 van however I believe my post was still relevant to the OP in that the cylinders are different and calor officially do not exchange 6kg for 15kg butane.

The links are still relevant showing the difference in regulators and even though the OP may have the bulkhead regulator

Thanks guys, I'll have a look when the caravan comes out of storage on Wednesday.

The camping shop exchanged my spare butane for propane no problem and I got the correct connector for the 'van.

Rest assured, if anything looks too tricky, the propane will stay in situ - unconnected.
