hello all, looking for advice on re-installing the gas fire to my abbey gt 214 1987 model, she's old but a great little van. When we bought her the gas fire been ripped out and capped off along with the carver cascade 2 water heater non of which i presume working, i'm looking at putting them back in, mainly the fire, we've installed a electric fan heater but not as a permanent fixture. from what i've looked at so far, (obtaining the manual from swift) is that originally the flue comes out the fire and up. Looking at the manual it's the carver SL3002. Just want opinions if i can get a fire with underfloor flue installed instead?

I'm no expert on gas fire but I would have thought that as exhaust fumes are hot then they need to go upwards as hot gases rise by natural convection. This is the same for all chimneys, so an underfloor flue would be impractical.

So basically stick to the original heater type, to be on the safe side. I've seen a few but very little of heater my caravan had originally on ebay. May be worth getting hold of one, preferably working :p

Domestic gas appliances, must be installed correctly and in accordance with codes of practice and standards. This is a job that must be done by a qualified gas fitter. Whist touring caravans have certain exemptions it is still wise to have any gas appliance installed by a fitter as the whole system needs to be tested for safety.

Between the late 1960's and 1990 Carver did sell a range of heaters designated 1800's. These heaters we so remarkably efficient the flue gasses were cooled so much they could be exhausted below the level of the burner under the floor of the caravan. They were limited to only 1.6kw heat output.

As bigger caravans needed bigger heaters all larger models of heater needed roof flues.

There are safety reasons why you should not install an 1800 underfloor heater in a caravan where a roof flued heater was standard. Under the floor there will be more fixed ventilation holes which may well fall within the 1800 heaters exclusion zone.

The current range of 3000 series heaters Truma Heaters should be easily fitted if you cannot find a Carver 3600 or similar.

Do not underestimate the legal requirements for gas appliance installations.
