Can you leave a gas heater on all night or would it be more advisable to get an electric one?

I was thinking of getting rid of the gas heater and replacing with an electric one as i think it would be safer.

Providing the heater is working correctly there is no reason why it should not be left on overnight, apart from the cost of gas used.

Why do you think an electric heater may be safer than gas and what does the time of day have to do with it?

Caravan gas fires use the same principle as domestic ones - they are room sealed, no exhaust fumes enter the living space. Are you worried about the one in your house? Hence the requirement both in domestic and caravan usage to have an annual service by a professional.

As we generally use sites with EHU we use an electric convector heater most of the time set at the 750W setting but find there are times when, in cold weather, it is not capable of keeping the van sufficiently warm so.we then use the gas fire. If you remove the gas fire I think you would find it difficult to find an electric fire to fit in the space created. If using electric for heating there are only two choices, convector or fan and fan heaters are noisy.
In the past we have had to use the gas fire when the electric supply on site has tripped out.

Carbon monoxide poisons you just as effectively in the day as it does in the night if you are sitting in a van with the door closed, and you won't notice it awake, any more than you would asleep. Either way you are just as dead.
If the heater is properly serviced and working correctly and you have a carbon monoxide alarm then gas is safe to use.
As a woman of a certain age; anything that heats the van at night is BANNED.

Hello Matt,

Let me first assure you that provided your heater has been installed correctly and properly serviced, then because of its design it will be room sealed. This specifically means all the air and gas for combustion and the exhaust gasses are kept within the appliance and only vented through the flue. No flue products enter the living space.

Consesequenrly a caravan gas fire is as safe at night as it is during the day.

However if you were to have a problem at night because of monoxide (heaven forbid) then you would have the same problem during the day as well, so it would be unsafe to use it either day or night. :eek:hmy:

If you are worried then a carbon monoxide alarm can be bought fairly cheaply from most DIY stores or any caravan dealer assuming you do not have one fitted..

If you are awake, you will notice the symptoms, you can't mistake the increased heart rate, at least until you pass out
