GAS REGULATOR

I have a Sterling Europa 460, less than two years old. Last year, around February, I couldn't get the oven to light for dinner on first night. Breakfast was OK! Assumed that it was the fact I used butane so changed over to propane. No problems until last week. Same problem. No gas getting to oven, hob fridge or water heater. Removed pigtail - left tank for a couple of hours, reconected pigtail - everything fine. Dinner went fine but come breakfast same problem. Anybody any idea what the problem is and, more important, what the solution is?

Stuart,

You probably have the not infrequent problem of oil / plasticizer leaching out of the pigtail and running downhill into the regulator.

There are loads of postings on this - and that the correct installation of the regulator should have located it above the bottle take off valve - so what can you do?

1. Change the regulator - this will be a temporary fix - because you may still get plasticizer leaching out from the pigtail

2. Change the pigtail to one with a low (leachable) plasticizer content - this can range from 10% to under 1% - check the Gaslow website

3. Change the way the pigtail "runs" in your caravan - so that it flows uphill into the regulator - but the UK installations seem to be compromised here...

4. Change the pigtail to a metal lined pigtail - check the Gaslow web-site

And there's a temporary (could be permanent) on-site fix if you are happy to do it:

Use a cotton bud to remove as much "oil" from the regulator inlet as possible

back-flush the regulator by blowing (using you mouth and a spare bit of rubber tubing) from the low-pressure side and forcing out any "oil" from the works.

As soon as we changed the van last year we bought the steel braided pig tail from the gaslow site which reduces the chance of oil leaching out of the pigtail. Wasnt cheap

Pigtail less han one year old. Blew through pigtail - no blockage or gunge. Suspect dodgy regulator- spring on diaphragm?
