Hi all, I have a 2006 Mondeo tdci hatch and during the present freeze selecting 1st and reverse gears from cold has proven difficult. A little force and a few attempts does the trick. Is this something to concern me? Best wishes, Butler

Hi
I have a 2004 mondeo and over the last couple of weeks have been having the same problem however it hasn't affetcted the running of the car and after it has been warmed up the problem seems to go away so I would say that it would not be much of a concern (I hope not anyway).
Hope this helps!

if you put it in 2nd then will it go into 1st easier? if it does its probably a little bit of clutch spin (the opposite of slip), likely due to the plates freezing.

I had a Nissan primera which i always kept garaged, and warm due to the integral garage.

When i passed it on to my lad he complained about 1st and second gear when it was cold, he parked his outside the garage.

Only advise i could give him, apart from the obvious, was to try double declutching, and hold onto the gears a bit longer, to get some heat into the box.

Thanks very much for the reassurance. As you say, when the car has warmed up, it's no longer a problem. On a slightly different thread, am I correct in thinking that Ford have a got a patent on the heated front screens? (which are an absolute godsend in the present freeze). Best wishes and seasons greetings, Butler

Front windscreen heating is a real bonus on our car! Only takes about a minute to defrost and is a lot cheaper than buying cans of defrosting agents.

na, hydraulic fluid doesn't freeze until about -40. and even if it thickened up a bit it would make the pedal stiff but would still work.

the fact that only first and reverse are affected indicates clutch spin, the plates are freezing and not fully separating until their warm.

similar to what happens when the clutch is worn and you try to adjust it on the cable to the point where it wont fully disengage.
