Please can anyone suggest a picturesque/interesting route for us to travel up through Germany from Austria to Dunkirk over a 2 week period in early July. We will have visited Moselle/Black forest/Bavarian areas earlier so maybe a little further East.

Our first visit was last year and we were really impressed with the country.

many thanks

Coming from Austria and heading for Dunkirk I presume that you won't want to go too far north or east, but one alternative is the Romantic Road from the Austrian border to W

I think Lutz's suggestion of the Romantic Road is ideal and would meet your requirements. We have not doe the enture length in one go have have looked at various sections on several visits.

As Lutz and David have already mentioned the Romantic Strasse is a wonderful area. We have done the route back to Calais from Austria many many times with just the car or the last 6 years with caravan.

If you would care to look at the website I have just built http://www.dvthompson.webs.com/joysofcaravanning you can view the different routes we have taken back to Calais with sites en route. Leaving Southern Austria we go to either Mondsee near Salzburg see Site no 13 in 2006 trip or Bertchesgaten site 4 in trip 2009. Then you can either go along to Innsbruck and north up the Romantic Strasse or further east up around Munich to Rothenburg Site No. 16 in Trip 2008. From the Romantic Strasse you can go up to stop on the Rhine and Bitburg as we did in 2009. Hope you get some tips from the website that will help. As you see we go out of season and visit nearly all ACSI Camping Card sites at 11 to 15 euros per night. If you need any other help let me know. We are off there in 10 days time but will be on the internet throughout the 12 weeks we are in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Holland.

Thanks all, will get the map out this weekend and certainly look at your web site Dianne. We did travel some of the Romatic Road last year and loved Rothenburg which is why we are keen to see more.My problem is Germany is so vast and unfamiliar it takes me ages to locate places!

Thanks Lutz we got on the web site and yes Dianne it is great and we had already decided to visit several of the sites you have visited. Decided to take the advice of all and come back up the Czech border across to Bamburgh and Coburg. As this will be first 2 weeks in July do you think we will need to book sites?

thanks again to all who replied its fantastic to be able to call on such experience.

So long as you don't leave it too late in the evening before looking for a site, you should be alright without booking in advance during the first 2 weeks of July as the school summer holidays in Bavaria are later than normal this year (they are from the 02.08. until the 13.09).

When we came back last year, first week of June, the sites near Passau and Wurzburg started to fill up at 4 pm as this is the route for the Dutch going down to the South. Both sites were chock o block by 6 to 7 pm. but by 9.30am the next day the sites were empty. I don't know what it is like a month later though.
